4Take the rough with the smooth
By Mr BD
There are basically three types of shaves - blade, foil and rotary. More often this divides into three camps - Gillette, Braun and Philips. I will admit now that I have used Braun for more years than I can recall, but thought I'd give this 'Wet and Dry' shaver a go - and was pleasantly surprised.Once you get through the bomb-proof packaging, requiring a really good blade of some sort to penetrate the plastic bubble it is sealed in, it is extremely light. Curved to fit comfortably in the hand, with a rubber coating on the buttons. And there are only two buttons - one very large on the inside of the grip to switch it on and off and another on the back to release the pop-up hair-trimmer.Charging takes one hour, during which a small light on the back pulses. It is surprisingly quiet when used. I thought the battery was drained when I first heard it, but the rotary blades do not make a great deal of noise. Mind you, the hair-trimmer makes up for that - don't use that if you're worried about waking anyone up!As a dry shave it doesn't appear to be as good as the foil shaver I generally use, appearing to require several re-visits to get the skin as smooth as I am used to. However, it is considerably better than smaller shavers I usually take on holiday. With a foil shaver I can tell by the noise of the foil sliding across my face just how closely I have been shaved. With this I keep having to check with my other hand. Not the end of the world.Cleaning this is just a matter of running it under the tap. The face, with the blades on, flips open and you can run the water inside. There is also a small brush included for regular maintenance.Using this for a wet shave is impressive. It feels so much smoother and does appear to do a far better job than a dry shave. The shaving foam doesn't bother it, just rinse it now and again so it doesn't disappear under the foam as you move it around. So if you have the time it is definitely worth it.It comes with a small pouch that has a cord to hang it from. It would have been nice if this pouch had a little pocket to store the brush in - I will lose the brush eventually. A small instruction manual shows with diagrams how to charge, use, clean and maintain it.Many, many years ago I tried a Philips shaver and thought I was going to end up like Freddy Kruger, but this is such a nice shaver. If I have the time for a wet shave then I will use in preference to any other shave. If you're from the Philips camp of shaving I think you're in for a treat.

5Closest electric shave I've had - and it can be used wet too
By R. S. Bacon
This Philips shaver ticks all the boxes: quick to charge, long run times, quiet in operation and most importantly of all gives a really good shave.Used as a traditional electric shaver it performs well; so well that I have to say it's probably the closest electric shave I've had. No tugging or post-shave soreness either. But the ace up its sleeve is that you can shave wet with this shaver. That doesn't mean shave whilst in the shower, it means using foam or gel as though you were going to use a blade.I tried it using Nivea gel foam (comes out as green gel and goes on your face as foam, magic) which this shaver then removed as part of the shaving process leaving my skin even smoother than before. No clogging of the head either and you just rinse the head under water afterward, shake off the excess and put it away. Simples. And a perfect shave too.The foam acts as a lubricant which allows the shaver to glide over your face. And it really does remove ALL the shaving foam as it does it, giving further proof that it shaves closely. So, a quiet, smooth shave with a washable shaver - what more can you ask for?

5Bye Bye Gillette!
By Maulana Pir Nakhshbandi Sahib
I've never been a fan of electric shavers as i feel they don't give a closer shave than a manual razor...until now that is. This shaver gives you a closer shave than a Gillette ProGlide Razor, but you will have to be patient to get results. If you've never shaved before using an electric shaver, then you need to use this for at least 3 weeks for your skin to get used to it. The first time i shaved (wet) with this shaver, it hurt like hell with blood all over my neck. I started using Nivea Extreme Comfort post-shave balm which helped with the irritation. Over the next few weeks, the irritation got less & less and now there is no irritation. The thing to bear in mind when using this shaver is to shave in a circular motion with VERY light pressure; if you press too hard, it will irritate your skin! I have also switched to dry shaving using Old Spice pre-electric shave lotion which really helps to give you a close shave. The Jet Clean system not only cleans the shaver but also lubricates it. I use this twice a week and it definitely keeps the shaver in tip-top condition.Any downsides? Yes, from reading various reviews it seems that there is a major design bug in the sensotouch 3d series as there seems to be no overcharging protection built in the shaver. Its been widely reported that leaving the shaver on charge for extended periods of time 'fries' the battery and some people have reported having a dead battery after 6 months of use. I cannot confirm this as i'm unwilling to take the risk so i always unplug the charger from mains after the shaver is fully charged. Finally i bought this from Amazon USA (Jet Clean version of 1280 wasn't available in UK at the time) and i only paid £230 including delivery & import taxes. Ordered on Friday and was delivered the following Tuesday all the way from Las Vegas to Inverness! Brilliant service as usual from Amazon.

5A new Experience
By RJM
After reading all the reviews on Amazon and across the Internet I was a little sceptical as to whether the outlay for such an item would in fact be worth it, especially with the reviews highlighting some of the negative points. Enough to say I made up my mind and ordered the item from Amazon. It was delivered 2 days ahead of schedule and in good condition. The item was well packed and pretty simple to setup and get working. The instruction book is aimed at making it easy for idiots, and therefore was highly confusing for everyone who does not fall into that category :).The Shaver charged from zero to 60 minutes in no time at all. The charger then stopped charging the shaver which seems to contravene many of the reviews saying that the charger never stops. Whilst there is a charge the shaver shows the length of time it can be used. As soon as the charging has ended the display goes black. As I have never used an electric shaver before I was a little reticent with using it due to the reviews that state how it takes many days or even weeks for the skin to get accustomed to the shaving technique. This was compounded as I have very sensitive skin and can come out in blotches with a wet shave razor, and only use sensitive shaving gel!Having little patience I decided to try it out as soon as possible, not even bothering to use gel but purely dry shave. I followed the instructions, to the picture, using gentle circular motions and before I knew it I had easily shaved a days growth. The results were not as clean as a razor, although easily comparable to a new razor only used shaving in the direction of growth. So all in all a very good result. The most astounding detail is that I am still to have a reaction, after a number of days shaving dry, using the appropriate technique, I have not had an adverse reaction at all!! This really has positively surprised me.The wet shave works very well and I am sure the cleaning procedure will be as nearly all the other reviews.I just wanted to add a review that highlights some of the questions that are raised and how I have experienced the shaver first hand.Is it worth the money? If you have the money definitely, although maybe I am not the best judge as I have no comparable knowledge of other electric shavers, but it compares very favourably to a new razor blade with ease.I hope this review will help others with some of the doubts that I myself had.

2Style over substance?
By Clara
Found this with a £100 discount - so no brainer? I wanted to upgrade my several years old Philishave 8894. First the negatives. The accompanying instruction leaflet is IKEA style and as helpful, which means not at all.The ergonomics are poor, long and thin with a polished slippery surface. The battery recharge life at 60 minutes is less than half the 8894.It comes with an ugly cleaning tank. The 8894 is simplicity itself to clean. Flip the hinged head, blow out beard shavings (preferably out the window) and run under tap. Done!Cost of running the 8894 other than electricity - NIL.At a rough estimate the RQ 1280 would cost about £80 a year in cleansing solution with the pain of shopping for it. And this for a razor with a RRP of £299. At £7 a go for 300ml of ionised water, think inkjet cartridge rip-off.The blade length of the trimmer is just 15mm wide, not a huge problem but its 25% smaller than the 8894.Other reviewers mention 'battery fry' if the 1280 is left on charge too long. I cannot comment further but I have done this many times with the 8894 with no adverse effect. The ability of the razor to follow the contours of the face is a much vaunted feature but the head 'flex' is only marginally greater than my existing razor. Now for the positives.Well, there are none to mention, it has been returned. Most of the reviews of this product are favourable, for me it's overpriced even with a third off and over stylised, so it's back to my vintage 8894. If you suffer from razor rash or eczema, try Nivea's Post Shave Balm, occasional use has worked well for me and at £5 a time, it may save you a lot of money.

5Solid and reliable, like all Philips shavers I have used
By Andromeda Descendent
Philips always seem to make very good shavers, and there is nothing to fault this latest Power Touch model. There is a rubber area where your thumb grips it that incorporates the power button, on the back there is a pop-up trimmer, and the three shaving discs are on pads that rotate to match the contours of your face. Additionally, the whole thing is on a pivot that I think is a new feature to this range, as I haven't see it in their shavers before.Cleaning the bits of whisker out is very easy, as all you need to do is pull down on a catch and the top flips open. It's well placed away from the grip, so that there's no chance of pushing it by accident. There's a little brush included to help you with cleaning inside this compartment, and cleaning the mechanism itself when it's time to dismantle it and give it a quick service. This is something you should do with this type of shaver from time to time to keep it working well - and the instructions include easy to follow diagrams that show you how to do this.Another feature is that when you remember that yesterday the shaver ran out of power and you said to yourself, "I'll charge it this evening" and then forgot to do so, you can plug it in for a few minutes and it'll give you enough to take it away to the bathroom for one shave. It also comes with a power cord and plastic shaver-head cap.

3Being over-sensitive...
By stylepuppy
I've been shaving electrically for more years than I care to admit (OK, it's over 30 years!) but I've always used foil shavers, this is the first rotary shaver I've owned and I'd always been curious about how they performed. Firstly, I'll admit I'm blessed (?) with quite sensitive skin and shaving in particular can be a painful business for me, but after all these years my face is completely used to electric shavers (I almost never blade-shave) so I wasn't expecting any problems. I've given my face a couple of weeks to adjust to the PT870 but it's still not happening, we're not getting along very well at all. They're like lawnmowers! The difference between using a foil shaver and a rotary is much like the difference between a cylinder lawnmower and a hover one. The cylinder is more precise, cuts shorter and is more controllable especially on the edges. The hover is good over open areas but it's a bit imprecise and less controllable and doesn't give me an even finish. On normal beard hair the PT870 works OK, it cuts reasonably short and it's surprisingly quiet (if that matters) compared to most of my previous shavers. If you stray away from your stubble, onto neck hair for example, it's not so good - with softer, less bristly hair it seems to act more like an epilator, yanking hair out at the root instead of trimming it and that gets painful. The pop-out trimmer isn't the best either - it can only be moved in a downward direction during use, if you try to move upwards it just folds the trimmer back into the shaver. There are good things about the PT870 - the ability to rinse it under running water is great, no more buying cleaning solutions (although Philips do offer them) and it also recharges quickly. Changing the cutters or removing them for more intensive cleaning is fiddly but Philips say they can last for two years before needing replacement and that's longer than any foil shaver I've had. In the end shaving's a subjective thing for most men and It might just be that my skin doesn't suit the PT870, but if you also suffer sensitive skin or are prone to shave-burn I'd think twice about getting one. I wish I liked it more but I'm disappointed by it and I know from experience there are much better shavers available in this price range.

3pretty good, but can't replace a wet shave
By Ibraar
Well, I'm not one who is used to using electric shavers.I have one of those faces where you'll see a 5 o clock shadow at Noon - and my facial hair is THICK!I tend to wet shave as many years before when I tried using a phillips shaver my stubble was troublesome, and impossible to comfortably shave with the electric - and so the shaving was an arduous endeavour - and to top it off I came out in a nasty rash! So, many years later I've found myself in possession of this new shaver from Phillips. After giving it a go I have decided that it's not for me - not because my stubble is too course or thick, no, it's because I find this shaver inadequate just like any other electric shaver, inadequate in that it is simply incapable of effectively and quickly shaving the stubbel on my chin and neck area and cannot cut a straight side burn line.To be fair it ploughs through the stubble on my cheeks and upper chin and sides easily, but then struggles to cope with contours and my neck and lower chin leaving bits of annoying bum fluff I need to contort and push the shaver to deal with - and it's all rather annoying and time consuming which means the whole point of having an electric shaver - to save time - comes to nought! If you're used to electric shavers, this is fairly good - its waterproof, easy to wash and clean, battery lasts a long time, its well built, and sturdy, and the shaving head is flexible and the blades perform very well with no sign of burns or a rash. It has a pop out trimmer with which one can trim sideburns or a beard - but lacks the ability to shave a staright line eg. to line off a side burn effectively!Others may well give it 4 to 5 stars, but unfortunately it's not for me and I find a wet shave quicker, easier, more accurate, more comfortable and ultimately the 'ritual' is more a part of the day and life rather than this electric shaver.I've given it 3 stars as it's not 'crap' nor is it useless, however it is I believe strictly for those who are used to and prefer electric shavers and for those I'd recommend buying!

4Good, for an electric shaver.
By MarkH_1974
I admit to start with, me and electric shavers have never really got on. I find that they never get close to the blade shaving experience, and the only benefit of electric shavers is their convenience and swiftness. So it was with some trepidation that I decided to give another one a go. And was actually pleasantly surprised.I suspect electric shavers are much better than I remember on the whole, but this is the best electric shaver I have ever used. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't get as close as a blade shave does but it is very good and I am happy using this before work to get rid of any annoying roughness. It does that job very well, with the bonus of not having to worry about and spots of blood on the shirts type of incident! The 3 independent heads on a suspension system make up the head unit. The 3 shaving heads are sprung and independent of their surrounds, so that there is a lot of flexibility for the shaver to fit the contours of your face. I found that this was really good and definitely has to be one of the main reasons why this shaves much closer than any other electric I've ever had.The look and feel of the shaver is good. It feels like a sturdy piece and it feels good and solid in the hand. Not heavy, just solidly made. The shape and grip material means it fits nicely in the hand and is comfortable to hold as you shave away. There is also a handy sideburn/beard trimmer built into the back that flicks out nicely at the push down of a sliding switch. Handy and effective for keeping sideys in trim!Charging is very quick with only an hour or so taken to give this a full charge. And it lasts a reasonable amount of time to. I was also impressed with how long it held the charge. I went away for a couple of weeks, came back and the charge was still in there quite strong. The only downside is this will only plug into a dedicated shaver socket. Maybe it is my naivety but I am not sure if every bathroom will have a shaver socket? As I haven't used one for a long time it is probably just me.Cleaning and maintenance is good too. A simple little switch just under the shaver head flicks the blades section up and allows you to easily empty out the shavings. Once the head is open it is a very simple twist of a central switch to release the 3 heads and take them out for a proper clean. And putting them back in is equally as simple.Overall then, a good electric shaver that I am now using as my quick out-of-the-door-to-work device. I still revert to the blade shave when I am seeing friends or going out because the electric still isn't quite as good and doesn't leave me feeling as smooth, but it certainly is a very good shaver for everyday use.

5Very Impressed with my first Philips Electric Shaver
By Tellboy
I have used electric shavers for 40 years but these have always been either a Remington or a Braun. I have never tried a rotary shaver always thinking the cutting area looked rather small compared to the normal models.I found with a Braun no matter how expensive the model you always needed a wet shave after a few days to remove the designer stubble effect.Missing a day with an electric shaver always meant for me that a wet shave was needed before I could use an electric shaver again. This Philips PowerTouch PF860 Electric Shaver was a revelation. At first I thought the battery was flat as it was so quiet and running at what seemed to me in comparison to other shavers very low motor speed. I can actually hear the radio whilst shaving which is unusual.A mistake I made was pressing too hard having needed to do this before and ending up with a glowing skin area around my neck as it cuts much closer than I was used to.I tried leaving two days of growth and it was no problem at all giving a shave as close as a wet shave with no areas missed using the circular action recommended. The re-charge according to the diagrammatic instruction sheet only takes 1 hour or it can be used from the mains directly. It will definitely replace my existing Braun shaver.

4It does the job.............
By Bob's Mum
A traditional style electric shaver, which works well. It offers a good enough shave, but I found it a little time consuming to use.It feels nice in the hand and not too heavy. Not a handy enough size for travel though. Accurate over irregular areas such as neck and (dare I say) jowls, and with the added feature of a fine area trimmer (which pops out) for close detail areas (nose and lip). What I did find is it doesn't offer a close enough shave that a wet shave does, and if you try too hard to achieve a closer shave you essential end up with razor rash like no other!Good long battery life, and reliable make. Good enough.

5Stylish, Sturdy yet lightweight cot
By Bee
I had this cot to go by my bed as we didn't have room for our full size one in our room. The cot is very well made, sturdy yet light enough to make it easy enough to move to and from your bedside, making it a safe almost co-sleeping cot. i would imagine you could easily convert it.The base has 3 heights and it has a drop side.I am thrilled with it and will be happy to recommend it to friends

    5Excelent Trecking Boots
    By John
Hi All,I've had these boots a couple of weeks now, been on a few long walks 10K plus, no rubbing or chaffing.I'm size 9.5UK, but normally buy size 10, however with these boots a size 9 fits perfectly.40 pound cheaper than the town shops - would recommend to walkers.

    By Avo
Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw these up for £36!!! I ordered a pair of size 11's straight away and a few days later they were here. As always great service from Amazon *****These boots fit perfectly, I have a wide foot and take size 11 as standard, if you have a narrow foot you may be able to get away with the next size down! I highly recommend you spray these boots with a protector to keep them in tip top condition. The colour looks even better when you take them out of the box!I currently own three pairs of CAT boots and will always buy CAT as they are top quality and look smart with jeans. My first ever pair of CAT's lasted 18 years!!! (I had walked a hole in the sole, all the stitching etc. was still perfect) that's how good they are!

    5Solid, comfortable footwear.
    By JCS
Like most blokes, I do not need a thousand pairs of shoes to feel self worth. So when my previous set of boots had clearly seen better days after 6 years, it was time to buy a replacement set.A word to the wise, stick them in the basket and keep a track of the price. These went from a £100 to £50 and back again a couple of times. The boots are solid, well made and I suspect I will not need a new pair for another 6 years!

    4Light weight, good fit
    By Anonyfinn
The first thing that comes to mind is how light this helmet is -- that's because yesterday, getting all my gear ready to do a cycle between towns with my son (stuff strewn everywhere -- and no, not all of it mine!), I asked him if he had seen my cycle helmet. He said no. So I wasn't amused after looking for it for some minutes to find that I was wearing it. I'm a 58 cm head and manage to get a thin hat under it. It has a bug net. The rear tightening mechanism is large and tactile, though I don't see a use for the quick release button, as it's just as fast to dial. The adjustment is very good and I feel I get a good fit. As for the straps, like other helmets you still have to faff around for a while to get the straps adjusted right, but at least it's generally something you only do once in a major way. To my eyes, it's a good looking piece. I won't comment on the ventilation as that's personal and depends on the season -- plenty of holes, however. It's possible that this helmet sits just a tad higher over the ears than some others. Also, perhaps still normal in this price category, there's no vertical adjustment on the rear fitting, but as stated, I still got a comfortable and snug fit that seems pretty secure. So, light, a good fit, and for this price it should look half-decent, which it does. And as above, sometimes you don't know you're wearing it.

    5Limar helmet
    By T. Griffith
I bought this helmet because it has an insect (bug) net over the front vents. I also consider a peak essential to keep off sun and rain. I'd have liked a red and yellow one - otherwise it is perfect.

    5very pleased
    By wasso
It's very good in quality, the straps are easily adjustable, if you wear it properly it protects from the annoying and blinding sun, and in high speeds you can enjoy the air flow through your head. Plus if you're a lady it looks good on you. I haven' fell yet, so I can't comment on that. To avoid confusion, I purchased the Limar 635 white helmet. I would definitely recommend a visit to the LIMAR HELMETS official web site, for the needed info of every helmet. The descriptions on the amazon site site is very poor and often misleading.

5Definitely the best smartphone, for me
    By Ben
Being a text-happy gadget loving student, after a few weeks of research deciding between the iphone 4, htc desire z, htc desire hd and the blackberry torch, I'm confident I made the right decision.BATTERY LIFEThe odds of finding a phone with a responsive touch screen and a half decent battery life that didn't require charging every day, were slim up to this point. This is why the torch intrigued me, coming from a sony x10 in which I was lucky to last 8 hours before grabbing the incredibly un-portable, portable charger. Battery life presents itself as a massive selling point to me, with the torch the touchscreen is crazily responsive and I don't have to panic if I miss a charge for one or two days. Granted you have to learn how to close you're applications properly or they continue to run in the background, and also drain your battery in the background. As long as you press the option key and select close, rather than press the big red button (DON'T DO IT!) you're battery will remain safe and will last a good 40 hours with heavy use.TOUCH SCREEN AND RESOLUTIONNow the one thing blackberrys aren't famous for is their screen resolution, being that the torch kept the same resolution as it's other latest blackberrys (480x360) yet made it's screen bigger was not the best of ideas from RIM, needless to say it's not a horrible resolution, 8 out of 10 times you'll get the response you want when you use the touch screen however a lower resolution will of course effect the touch screen, not a massive problem at all, however I would be lying if i said it was never an inconvenience. As for the responsiveness of the touch screen it is no different than an htc or an iphone and thank god it doesn't click in like the storm. From time to time the responsiveness is a little late, but that's the processors fault, so moving swiftly on.PROCESSOR AND MEMORY MANAGEMENTThe torch may only have a 624mhz processor compared to most new and advanced smartphones which are packing 1ghz processors, rim have used memory management as a key to their success, the torch running os 6 helps the torch use its processor to maximum efficiency. You will find with correct use that the torch functions just as quickly as as an iphone or htc desire, providing you close applications properly like I previously mention. You can check to see if you've left programs open by holding the options key at the home screen, and you just select and properly close the applications you don't want running and hey presto, smoother running processor.APP WORLDBlackberry app world was introduced along with OS6, there's thousands of apps to choose from and plenty of free apps. App world is still a work in progress, it hasn't been around for as long as the ios app store or android market place, so there are obviously fewer apps at this moment in time. However there are still tons of apps that focus on primary needs, especially the pre installed trial version of word to go which is essentially all components of microsoft office that allow you to download an open powerpoints, word documents, spreadsheets and pdfs and so on. The full app costs about £10 and is well worth it.CameraThe torch is one of the first blackberrys to be blessed with a decent 5MP camera, compared to the old 3.2MP camera on other blackberrys this is a huge improvement. Sure it's not HD like the new htc desire z and hd or the iphone 4, but it doesn't have to be, it's sharp and captures clear memories with an led flash.QWERTY KEYBOARDNow a great attraction about the torch is a responsive smartphone with a keyboard, the keyboard isn't exactly like the old bold and curves but is still pretty similar, it takes some time to get used to but only a couple of weeks and once you are used to it you'll never look back. One thing I can't stress enough is that there is no wrong way to use the torch, if the slider is down you can get an on screen qwerty, in portrait or landscape screen mode. This is really helpful for when you only have one hand free (for whatever reason) because when the slider is up it gets pretty tall and requires the attention of both hands.E-MAILBlackberrys, what a reputation they have as business phones, i've already configured all three of my emails on my torch, and can customize the alerts for each one, view single or combined address inboxes and download and view pretty much any kind of attatchment. The e-mail sending is fast and able to do in the background thanks to os 6's multi tasking. Writing them is quick thanks to the qwerty keyboard and you can also attatch your own files.PC SYNCThe torch connects with your computer thanks to blackberry desktop software and if you want you can sync all of your files with it, music, pictures, documents and so on. However that is come to be expected with all desktop software, but the one thing that seriously caught my eye in blackberrys software was the option to tether. For those of you who aren't sure what tethering is it is essentially using the mobile internet included in your contract or pay as you go sim but on your computer (isn't technology wonderful?) Once you have your blackberry connected to your lap top or desktop you can choose to access the internet through your phone at no extra cost than it would using it on your blackberry, just make sure you don't go over your contract.STORAGEThe torch come with a 4gb micro sd card, and because of that has expandable storage up to 32gb, but i've found 4gb to be plenty of memory even with music and apps.WEB BROWSINGWhat review would be complete without mentioning the fastest growing media in the world? The torch's web browsing comes with flash, what a dream come true, the speed is simply brilliant for a smart phone and it displays web pages just like your computer would. It is a huge improvement over other blackberrys.NAVIGATIONOS 6'S navigation is just as easy with the optical trackpad as it is with the touchscreen, use of how you navigate really depends on how you're holding your phone, when I have the slider up I tend to use the optical trackpad to navigate as the screen requires a pretty long reach if your holding it at the bottom to use the keyboard, when the slider is down I make good use of the touchscreen but it's easy either way and you'll end up just using whatever works for you.PRICEFor the price amazon is giving you'll be getting a fair deal on a brilliant smartphone, it however would be wrong of me not to mention blackberry services, which includes of the web browser, app world and bbm would cost an extra £5 a month, now you can add this to your existing contract without cancelling it like I did, or you sign up for it on pay as you go. However this is a small price to pay to make use of your flash new smartphone. This is my first review and I hope it has been helpful.

5A Blackberry for those fed up with Gimmicky phones.
    By A. G. Lawson
I don't consider myself to be a 'fanboy', albeit I have previously owned a Blackberry Pearl and an 8900. My last phone was a HTC Desire, which was very pretty, good at everything multimedia, web browsing was superb with Flash support, etc.My problem with the Desire was that it simply didn't "Work" like Blackberrys, what I mean is that when I turn on my Blackberry it will synchronise with my POP email account, Facebook, and SMS, and then will immediately notify me whenever I get a new message, until I turn the phone off again. The Desire doesn't do this, it instead will go and check for updates at a defined interval, which in my opinion isn't very efficient. The benefit is that Blackberrys use push notifications, meaning that your phone gets told when there is an update. The Torch is RIMs attempt at competing with the iPhone and influx of Android phones. At the end of the day the technical specification of the Torch is not comparable to the iPhone or average Android, the screen is a lower resolution, the camera isn't as good, the processor is slower, and there isn't as much memory; but, none of that really matters, because the hardware differences are essentially superficial, what matters is that the phone does what you want it to do, the fact is that it is good at being a communications device...When you turn your phone on for the first time the set up wizard asks you a couple of questions and within a minute or two emails start to arrive in your mailbox. Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube are all there ready for you to use. A quick search in App World gets you eBay, and a quick web search will get you Google Mobile (Maps, Sync, GMail, and more). I use Google to store my contacts, Google Sync is great for storing and retrieving my list of names and numbers. Soon RIM are going to release 'Blackberry Protect' which will fulfil this same function, you will be able to back up your device remotely and find where it is via the Blackberry Protect website (I have beta tested this app on the 8900, and it is amazing). The touch screen is responsive, and looks very nice indeed (that fact that it has less pixels than other popular phones doesn't really matter - my eyesight simply isn't good enough to make out the individual pixels), the on-screen keyboard works well, the hardware keyboard is perfect. The touch pad takes some getting used to, I ended up making mine less sensitive in the settings.Wifi N works well, making FREE calls across the UMA network is always a nice feature to have, if you end up anywhere without signal but do have Wifi access you can still call and text without any problem.OS6 is nice, it doesn't try be pretentious and pretty like Android does, a simple clearly laid out home screen which is uncluttered, swipe left or right to scroll through the new category views, context sensitive menus based on whatever you click, and a wonderful help option for everything. There are a few bugs that I expect RIM to be fixing very soon; The YouTube up-loader always fails, for instance. The media player is as good as any iPod interface, and sound through headphones is good. I'm not entirely sure about video, I'm using the same micro sd as I had in my HTC, and videos shot on the HTC won't play even though they have the same file extension as those filmed on the Blackberry (The HTC does play Blackberry videos though?!?). Wireless music sync takes a bit of setting up - install the latest desktop software and the appropriate app on the phone, whilst you computer is on your phone will list you media, select teh albums you want on your phone and they'll download for you to listen to later on.Pictures are organised well, can be sorted into folders, the camera is 5 mega pixels and isn't great in low light - daylight shots are great. The inbuilt file manager allows for all sorts of things to be done. The device lacks any good games, a simple brick breaker game, and Wordmole (word search style game). I would have though a card game could have been included.Blackberry Messenger is brilliant, you can message any Blackberry owner for free, share pictures, videos, sounds, calender, task lists, all with ease. Blackberry messenger can also be used to send text messages to non Blackberry contacts. The email client works well, in fact most of the email functionality is in line with any PC email client, although it does lack Junk mail filtering (Which is a shame). The web browser isn't perfect, it lacks Flash support and is a bit sluggish, I suspect that RIM will be working on these issues. My favourite bit about the Blackberry is the settings, there simply are so many things you can tweak, for instance you can change the default currency icon, lock screen message, theme, wallpaper and ringtone, all with a few clicks around the well organised and endless list of options. The keyboard seems to work perfectly, when typing with my thumbs each key seems independent, and provides good positive feedback when typing. The slider seems sound, no rattles when giving it a good shake. Phone itself is heavier than you expect it to be, feels very sturdy. The rubberised back makes holding it comfortable. Two gripes. The battery cover is a bit awkward to get off. The conveinience key has to be pressed firmly to get a response. One more thing to add. Unlike other Blackberry models, this one doesn't come with a case, if you order this phone also get the case BlackBerry Torch Leather Pocket Case (Black)To summarise:If you are a Blackberry this device will do everything that you'd expect a Blackberry to do and will do it very well indeed. If you have not owned a Blackberry, but want to own a phone that works well, securely, and makes sense when you use it, you will be happy with this phone. If you want a phone which is great at playing video, and browsing the web, and don't care about well thought out messaging and email, then I think really you should buy something else, because this phone is not for you.I love this phone, it does everything I want it to, my HTC simply didn't.

4iPhone 4? Blackberry Torch? Android Phones (HTC Desire, etc)? Which one!
    By P. Maddock
Christmas is coming up, and a popular purchase for anyone is a new phone/smartphone.And unlike any other time, today we have so many choices it's easily a difficult decision to make as these phones aren't cheap!!There are really 3 types of phone that are getting increasingly popular, and for good reason! They are the iPhone series (namely the i4), Blackberry series (the Torch at the moment) and the Android series (the HTC series are huge right now, but currently the Evo is getting a huge reception). Which one to pick? I have used all 3 and I will describe how I see each. The iPhone:A slick and eye catching phone, the iPhone 4 is a beautiful creation. Going back to basics with its industrial look instead of the 'rounded' look the 3GS pulled off so well, the 4 looks even better! The iPhone is basically the hype phone, which people buy the moment it's available for the kudos of owning one. With its thousands of apps and slick interface it's a fun phone to use definately. However, it has issues with dropped calls and a poor/basic email system. Also, the iPhone is currently an exercise in perfection, no real innovation compared to competitors. Apple are focussed on streamlining almost everything about the phone and making it a more pleasurable experience.Yet it feels like more of the same, just with a different appearance. The Blackberry:Always playing catch up with the iPhone, Blackberry have been second best at almost everything. The Torch however utterly destroys the performance gap between it and iphone 4, making it a far more difficult choice picking between the two. With it's fully working and optional QWERTY slider keyboard, the Torch is simply an excellent exercise in innovation, having touchscreen AND a physical keyboard. The UI has also been completely redone so it's more efficient and is slicker to use. Blackberrys will almost always lose to the iPhone in terms of browser opening times and internet speeds simply due to the differences in how they retrieve information. The BB will recieve compressed info and open it on the spot whilst the iPhone recieves it directly. The Android series:With so many choices in this series alone, I shall use the Desire as my example.A very different phone to the other two, it's almost as if it's a BB and iPhone combined. A sturdy construction means it isn't as prone to breaking as the iPhone (the phone is a magnet for damage) whilst the blackberry is simply built to last full stop.An extremely innovative and brutally efficient UI system means the Desire is simply a joy to use, with tonnes of customisation options to make that phone 'yours'.A brilliant messaging and email system means it's simple to use and to get what you want out of it.However it does lack something, I always feel that the phone lacks charisma, in the sense that a BB or iPhone will get someone's attention more than an HTC will...if you're 15 and your ego requires it that people acknowledge you by the phone you have then this is a genuine problem. But it simply doesn't look anything great, a basic look with great functionality, it's a gem undercover. To round off, these are the reasons why I would buy one phone over an other:The iPhone 4 - if you want a beautiful, recognisable phone with tonnes of additional extras then buy this. The apps will make this phone fun to use for months on end, however for everything else it's simply business as usual, with messaging and email, it works and that's it. The internet on this phone (youtube, browers) is superb, so for on the move web activities this is a must buy. This phone will do it's basic jobs as well as they need to, but will offer nothing that exciting apart from all the apps out there. But its internet system is simply the best out there. The Blackberry Torch - a very different feeling blackberry and phone overall, this phone is an excellent creation. So much choice in how you want to carry out tasks (keyboard or touchscreen?) and a remade UI (new notifications system which I personally adore) this phone feels very different and new but with an excellent build quality to it. Lacking in extras, this phone does its basics extremely well, making this a ruthlessly efficient phone. If you want a phone with superb messaging and networking (facebook, twitter) then the notification system makes this an outright winner in this category. The Android (HTC Desire) - a superbly produced and efficient phone that gets the job done with a slight twist. These series of phone (and the Evo especially) are so highly customisable that the phone will feel like it's yours and no one elses.A lot of widgets and shortcuts to use, it makes the phone's homepages look super attractive and innovative. Messaging and everything else is handled very well, and are very customisable too!Performance wise it's between the two others, but the other phones just don't feel the same. It makes no big claims as the iPhone does, it does its job very well and lets you adjust how it's done at the same time. For customisability and sheer fun and ease of use, this is a serious recommendation.
