Excellent Monitor (Provided you fit the criteria).

To give this opinion some context, I'm gamer/programmer and my priorities were firmly centred around getting a 120hz monitor with low input lag and a good response rate.It was a close run race between this and the BenQ XL2420T, but Amazon dropped the price on this monitor and my previous experiences with Samsung won out.I've been using it for about a week now and am delighted with the performance so far, the colours are vibrant (helped by the display coating) and you really notice the 120Hz refresh rate when gaming and even just moving windows around (it may ruin 60Hz monitors for you). The factory settings are insanely bright, so you'll probably have to tinker with the settings to get the colours/brightness as you like it (as with most monitors), but the menu is easy to navigate (although if you're a bit ham fisted/have fat fingers, the touch sensitive buttons may annoy you); as another reviewer mentioned changing things like 'MagicAngle' to 'Group View' is a good quick fix - at least to my eyes.I was fairly concerned about the glossy finish (I tend to steer clear for gaming), but it has been treated in such a way that the glare is nowhere near as bad as most glossy monitors - I sit by a window and it barely bothers me at all, even in dark games. Both the monitor and the glasses are provided with a microfibre cloth, to wipe away any marks/dust.3D is a bonus for me, I don't really need it, but to have a the glasses included is a nice touch - the included software seems to work easily enough, it detected some of my games on install and game me reasonable results. The 2D->3D conversion works better than I thought it would, provided your video source is fairly high resolution, and depending on what is happening on screen.Important notes:To use 120Hz, you must use a Displayport connection - I have an ATI 6970 with 2 Mini-Displayports so that was a factor when buying, I understand a lot of Nvidia cards don't have them, so check (I'm also not sure how 3DVision would get on with the monitor). The manual suggests you can view 3D in Side-by-side 60HZ mode if you have < AMD5000 series or an nVidia card although it says the "Recommended" option for 3D is AMD5000 series or higher using the Displayport for "FullHD Real 120HZ mode" - presumably an nVidia card with a Displayport may also do the job?If you wanted to mount this monitor on anything, you'll probably be out of luck, the reason it can be so thin is that most of the electronics are in the base/stand - so you can't detach it for any VESA mounting.It's no fault of the monitor - but there is a very annoying Windows 7 Displayport issue, where if you power the monitor down, windows assumes you've disconnected the monitor and for some obscure reason, resizes your windows into a "virtual display" of 1024x768, moving them to the top left corner of the screen - Google Disable "'Monitor Off' detection, how?". You can get around the issue in a number of ways - I tend to leave the monitor on and have its inbuilt "Eco" mode make it sleep after 5 minutes. Since you need to be connected with a Displayport for fully functionality, it can be a pain if you switch your monitor off frequently (as I tend to) - but it's no fault of the monitor itself.Another potential issue is an ATI driver one, I'm on Catalyst 12.1 at the moment, and if you start the computer without anything in the HDMI input, the ATI audio output is routed through the Displayport driver and will read "ATI DP Audio". If you want to plug something in to the HDMI socket, in my case a TV, you will have to reboot the computer with the TV turned on in order to get the "ATI HDMI Audio Output" option in the audio devices. My card manufacturer replicated the problem and has reported it to ATI, so hopefully there will be an option to switch audio paths in an upcoming driver. That's only really an issue if you intend to "Hot-Plug" an HDMI input.My first monitor had a single dead green pixel, but Amazon (excellent customer service) sent out another one immediately, and it is working perfectly.I'm giving it five stars because it fits my criteria perfectly, and the minor niggles are not caused by the monitor itself, but other drivers/software. I would thoroughly recommend it, provided you fit the criteria.It's a odd monitor, in that it's sort of geared towards people with ATI cards that want to use Displayport - it doesn't seem to cater for a wide audience.My understanding is that the Samsung SyncMaster S23A700D is the same panel as this one, although with more input options (no Displayport) - so that may be an alternative if you want this monitor on a card without Displayport - although it does have a different housing.Probably a bit long, but hopefully helpful to someone.

Beautiful image and now a beautiful price

Having tested this monitor and its 27" cousins extensively it is clear that there is a lot to like. The image is far from ideal out of the box but with a few simple tweaks (such as changing 'MagicAngle' to 'Group View') the image becomes rich, full and vibrant. The 'Ultra Clear Panel' screen surface makes a huge difference from your average matte antiglare surface as the light is emitted from the monitor directly without diffusion. The downside to this is that reflections can become an issue if there is direct light hitting the monitor - but if you can fit your room around the monitor instead of the otherway round you are duly rewarded. The 120Hz refresh rate is put to excellent effect - the grey to grey acceleration is extremely well implemented by Samsung giving minimal trailing and no distracting artifacts at up to 120fps. Input lag is also very low so you feel connected to the game in a way that no 60Hz LCD monitor can mimic. The monitor also includes a pair of SSG-3150GB active shutter glasses and integrated 3D functionality. With 2D performance as good as this, that's just a bonus given the current price.

This is an attempt at highlighting some important points (good and bad) about this monitor.Firstly, the monitor DOES NOT support a 120Hz refresh rate when connected via HDMI (even HDMI 1.4), as evidenced in the Specifications section of the Samsung user manual (see Samsung's site). Via HDMI, the monitor will support 60Hz only.***You MUST use DisplayPort to achieve the 120Hz refresh rate or even full (dual 60Hz) HD 3D! Make sure your graphics card has a DisplayPort output if you want this!***The above information was totally lacking on the Amazon page, however I feel this is a fault of Samsung's as they very much portray this monitor as offering "REAL 120Hz!" and having "multiple input options" when really the only way you'll experience this monitor at its best is via DisplayPort.Included in the box is a DisplayPort cable (male to male) which is useful if your graphics card has a DisplayPort port (Nvidia reference cards universally *do not* so unless you want to trump up ~£100 for a dual-link DVI to DisplayPort adapter, you are out of luck).My particular panel had two dead pixels at the top of the screen. It is being returned due to this and due to the mis-information re: 120Hz. Not impressive for a ~£400 unit.However, the colour representation was excellent, especially when "HDMI Black" setting was at "Low". The monitor looks as good as an excellent Dell IPS panel (but without the great viewing angles, naturally).The light and movement sensors are good but rather sensitive and I could see them getting annoying.The monitor also looks beautiful.Bottom line: buy this if you like the look of it *and you have a DisplayPort if you're after 120Hz!*. Otherwise, avoid.
