Not quite a studio in miniature by itself
By Dimbutnice
Which is not to say that it isn't capable of multi-track recording and mixdown as a standalone gadget. It is, and the quality it pretty good to boot. But it is physically very small which means the display is small and not high-res, resulting in a blocky effect on the graphics and text. So the small size is definitely a good thing if you want to take it around with you but it does make using the controls for anything other than basic stuff a bit fiddly.Fortunately it comes with Sonar X1 LE software which means that you can do all the clever stuff on your computer having used the BR-80 as a capture device. I've used a number of different budget and higher end programs for multi-track recording and I can't say Sonar (Cakewalk) is one I immediately warm to so if you've got a program you're happy with you may be able to stick with that and just copy the audio files across and import them. This is because the BR-8 has two modes when connecting via USB, one makes the BR-8 act like a normal removable disk drive and the other enables it to act as a 'soundcard'.When you run the installation software (stored on the BR-8) it installs as recording and playback devices, at least it did in Windows 7. Worth noting, the BR-8 input and output devices are only available in Control Panel (Sounds) when it is plugged in, turned on and the USB mode is set as USB Audio rather than USB Storage.Other stuff like the quality of the COSM sounds has been noted by others and is outstanding and suprisingly usable. It was kinda amusing to use the COSM Bass sounds with a regular electric guitar and get very passable basslines. There are the normal caveats like you can't record all tracks live at the same time, but you would have to have more than one input to do that and there's certainly not enough room for Boss to have done that.In summary, what you get for the price is outstanding value. If portable multi-track recording is what you are after, the BR-8 has to be a major contender.

The mini recording studio
By gocallaghan
I'm amazed by the BR-80 because years ago you would have needed at least a few different pieces of large kit to do what this little box (about the size of 2 mobile phones) can do. I think this is perfect for home demos, the recordings are of a very good quality. Only had it a few weeks and so far I've just been recording song ideas and then adding a 2nd track and it is great fun. Originally I was planning to get a field recorder just to record ideas but looking around led me to the BR-80 and I'm very glad I got this instead. There are around 100 effects for guitar, most are good although I find the guitar to bass effect is a bit hit and miss as it seems to jump back and forth between octaves especially as the note fades.I have yet to try out most of MTR mode and have not tryed at all eBand mode, so there is a lot to do in such a small box.My musician friends seem to go down the route of using a computer with a sound card etc. for capturing ideas. I like the BR-80 because it is very immediate, in the time it takes a pc to boot up I have the idea saved, it is also portable so tracks can be edited anywhere.

Outstanding value for money
By Lanky
I've been playing casually on and off for getting on for 20 years but would class myself as a novice player. I find I spend most of my guitar time with my BOSS loop station hooked into my amp and jamming along to riffs that I've recorded. That all changed when I stumbled along this little beauty I couldn't believe that I hadn't come across this before. It's simply superb. What you're buying here when you part with your cash is three units in one:1) 8-track multi-track recorder (MTR)2) eBand backing track machine3) Quality stereo mics for acoustic guitar recordingI've dabbled in the MTR but, given that I don't record much stuff, I spend much of my time in the eBand section of the unit. I use it by downloading guitar backing tracks and uploading them onto the BR-80. You can then use the BR-80 to slow the song down or change the pitch to help you build speed and gain valuable practise. The COSM amp modelling and effects are out of the GT-10 and the vast array of amps and effects you can achieve are worth the money alone.Whenever I feel the urge to play, no longer to I have to fire up the amp and record a riff, I can just put on some headphones, plug in the guitar and jam away.Brilliant.
