Great little android tablet

A year ago I bought an X5A Android 2.1 tablet and was disappointed - this tablet is everything I had hoped the X5A was going to be, and more.With Android 2.3 you get the whole flash experience, all the BBC embedded videos work, including full screen, etc. It has a capacitive touch which, combined with the 1Ghz processor, gives a smooth and enjoyable experience. Full Android market place, skype (tested voice, but not video calls - but it did detect the camera), street view, Facebook, Google maps etc all fly.The X5A as only 256Mb RAM, so keeps crashing but this tablet, with 512Mb, had no such problems. It also has noticeably better WiFi reception than the X5A - getting at least 2 bars all over my house. Battery life seems pretty good - it used about 60% in 2 hrs of heavy use.One slight niggle - the touch screen does not quite reach the long edges of the video screen by about 2 to 3mm, so (length-wise) you can't touch right to the very edge of the video screen. This mostly isn't an issue, especially when you know about it, but can make pressing the letter "P" a pain!The screen is 800x480 - which is the same resolution as most in-car video screens, hence they are made in volume and so are cheap - but by today's standards this is quite a low resolution and it is noticeable, but its totally fine for the job. The contrast (which can't be adjusted) is also a little high on mine, making the difference between the yellow & white on Google maps not a much as I'd have preferred.At the end of the day, if you want something that is beautiful and crisp, you have to pay the big bucks. I could buy three of these and still have change from the entry level ipad, and I think 7" is the ideal screen size. Its small enough to be portable, but big enough to do the job.

Good value for a starter tablet but has its flaws

I plumped for this tablet after seeing it come out top on a couple of group reviews of sub £150 tablets and decided to take the plunge and half expecting it to be something I'd use twice and then probably stick in a cupboard and revert to using my laptop or smartphone or give it to my daughter to play simple games on.Let me say first up - I can see myself using it regularly and at that price its a handy little gadget. I'll summarise the good points before moving on to the niggles...Build quality is great - its much heavier than I expected but it lends a solid and well engineered feel to it. The buttons are neat and fit well and the case is rigid enough that I'm happy for my 5yr old to play with it.The image quality of the screen is fine - its not the highest resolution and looks a little chunky compared to more expensive units but I've watched a couple of movies on it and had no complaints.The ability to plug in Micro SD card and USB devices is great and something you'd not necessarily expect on such a cheap tablet.Full access to the Android Market is again something that often the cheaper tablets don't boast but this is great.Performance is nice and zippy - much faster than my old Android phone and things like web browsing and games are suitably slick.Now the niggles in order of significance...Although there's a USB connection you can't charge via it which would have been great - instead you need to rely on the custom mains adapter.The rotation sensor is barmy - the unit just cant decide whether it should be portrait or landscape. Within 2 minutes I'd turned off auto-rotation.Battery life isn't great - probably get about 3 hours moderate use out of a charge.The touch screen is generally fine, however I have two complaints - its a bit over sensitive at times and when I try to scroll down a web page I end up activating a link (need to find a bit of clear space on the page to be safe!) and the touch-sensitive area doesn't cover the entire screen so trying to click on something at the extreme edge of the screen can be a little tricky.If you leave the machine in standby mode the unit periodically wakes itself up for a second and then reverts to sleep. Apparently this is Android checking for a 3G signal, even though there's no 3G modem in the unit! By default there's no control to tell Android not to try and use 3G but via the marketplace I downloaded a widget that allows you to do that but it didn't seem to make any difference. This means that the battery can get drained by the constant switching unless you power down the unit properly in which case it takes 30 seconds to boot rather than the 2 seconds to "wake"The camera is poor quality (not that I was planning on using it) and forward facing only which makes it difficult to use for much other than self portraits, and coupled with that it is positioned in the corner of the unit rather than centrally along one of the sides - this means its almost never in a sensible place in relation to your face if you are using it for a video call.Anyway... the niggles are just that - they don't materially affect my enjoyment of the unit and I find it great to have by the armchair to use for things like IMDB if I want to check up on who that actor is in the film I'm watching, or to use the excellent Sky Remote Record app which gives you a superb TV guide. Its also fine for games and letting my daughter learn how to use touch screen interfaces, and with the range of apps available in the marketplace there's always something of interest to add.Overall I have no regrets about buying it, however when Amazon launch their own Android tablet at a similar price I'd expect that will be a better option.

good for a basic tablet

Bought this for my Mrs as a Christmas present, and she loves it. The only real niggle is that it has terrible wifi performance - only giving maybe a single bar on the strength even when she's sat next to the access point, and with frequent disconnects, necessitating disabling and enabling the wifi in order to force it to reconnect.
