Beautiful screen but has convenience and functionality issues
By MiddleAgedFogey
Without doubt the display on this is the standout feature - it makes all other weather stations seem dull in comparison. However this unit has a number of downsides that take the shine off.Size: while described as being 7" (18 cm) in size, that is the screen only. The thick frame brings this up to 11" (28cm) which means the unit is far more bulky than described. The back support can be fitted both horizontally and vertically, but there is no ability to rotate the display to take advantage of this.Remote: Yes, this unit has a remote control - and needs it given that the buttons on the unit itself are awkwardly placed and require a firm push to register. However the remote is the same as that used by other items (the Chronos iDock radio being one example) so the weather station will respond to signals from similar remotes (muting the Chronos iDock will result in the display switching to calendar mode for example - highly irritating).Clock: This is able to synchronise with broadcast time signals but only uses the German DCF signal from Frankfurt, not the British MSF signal from Cumbria. This means worse reception (it only detects the signal when placed by a window, while another unit using MSF can receive it almost anywhere in the house), having to set the time zone to -1 and needing to make British summer time changes manually.Display: Yes, it's gorgeous but also under-utilised. About 40% of the full weather display used for a picture of projected weather (predicting rain and storms during the "Indian summer" of September 2011...). A smaller icon would have allowed for other information like the simultaneous display of indoor/outdoor temperature and humidity rather than alternating between them. The pressure graph is another example, showing a bar chart just like older LCD weather stations, when a line chart could have provided far more information in the same space. A significant omission is min/max readings for temperature and humidity - this unit does not record them, nor does it store any data for download to a PC (a sad oversight, given the provision of USB and SD memory slots).Sensors: A rainfall gauge and combined anemometer/wind vane/temperature + humidity sensor are included for outdoor use. While not tested (due to the item being returned), I have qualms about the combined unit's durability with several screws exposed to open air (not good for coastal users where the salt air can cause even stainless steel to rust). In particular the battery compartment is secured by 4 screws which seem likely to rust over time. The rainfall gauge uses tabs rather than screws to secure its batteries and seems likely to fare far better. A nice touch however is the provision of a compass on the combined sensor to help point the wind vane north when setting up.Picture frame: As well as weather, this unit can display pictures held on a USB stick or SD memory card. These can be cropped or scaled to fit the screen, several transitions/wipes can be selected and display can be in order or random. As a digital picture frame this unit performs well, especially with the quality screen. However the combined weather/picture mode is a comparative disappointment, showing the picture in one corner with basic weather statistics (on a black background) along the left and bottom. Overlaying the information on a full-size picture would have been more impressive - especially if the information shown could have been customised. Most of the issues here could probably be fixed with new software (though there's no mention in the manual about whether it can be upgraded) so if properly supported, this could be a killer product. However it isn't yet and could be compared to an Apple product in some ways - don't buy the first version but wait for the second.

Good product-But could be great
By banville fan
Easy set up but wind gauge fixings assume a small pole style attachment (not included) Used cable ties instead (very long/no rust). All readings appear to be very accurate but wind gauge would appear to under-read a bit especially when it gets really windy. The only negative comment is that there is no way of recording the max/min temp and max gusts etc. Would have loved to see data stored into the calender and some form of back up as my wife switched off at the wall and lost what little data is stored (total bainfall and monthly rainfall).

****** A MUST BUY ITEM ******
By J. Taylor
This is a brilliant weather station / photo frame, offering so much for a relatively cheap price. Has excellent graphics with an easy to read display. The unit if left on for a period of time does tend to show a slightly higher temperature indoors, I assume this is due to the display warming up. This is only about 1-2 degrees Centigrade so can easily be taken into account.I have had many remote sensor weather stations over the years and without a doubt can recommend this one as the best.It will also provide long term interest by combining both the weather station and photo frame, always able to display new photos, you will never by bored......
