Bargain entry into the world of professional publishing

For the price of bargain basement DTP software, the education edition of QuarkXPress 9 gives you access -- providing you qualify -- to the latest heavy-duty professional publishing software. Although an education edition, this is not stripped down or limited.If you are considering a job in journalism, publications or design, hands-on ability to use QuarkXpress will significantly boost your chances of getting the vital interview in what has become a very competitive market. This becomes especially important when attending an interview in which there is a test or exercise -- as an employer, I've several times sent an otherwise promising candidate home after they stared blankly at a Mac for half an hour before sheepishly admitting that they had 'tried Quark once or twice at college'.In terms of features, QuarkXPress 9 has everything you would expect at the high end, including a number of powerful and esoteric enterprise publishing features such as Job Jackets which are worth mastering if you are looking for a job at a publishing house. It also has reasonable html and Flash publishing facilities, though if you have access to student editions of Dreamweaver and Flash professional you should be looking at these rather than trying to achieve what you need in Quark.As far as value for money is concerned, the education edition is going for around 15% of the price of the full edition. Buying now and upgrading to the next version later will be a lot cheaper than waiting until you are no longer a student and buying the full-priced product.
