I went through my usual process of trying to convince myself I didn't need this. After all, I didn't succumb to temptation when the first iPad was launched. But I gave in this time as the blurb on this iPad successor boasted a much better spec. Forget the usual moans about this hasn't got this or it hasn't got that. It's a TABLET, with the limitations the name implies. It ain't a laptop. It ain't a notebook. So if you're looking for laptop facilities buy a laptop. The specs are very easily found on the net so I won't labour the point, suffice to say they are impressive compared to its other predecessor and other tablets on the market.I found I was always looking up stuff while watching TV. Getting up and looking things up on my desktop meant I was literally losing the plot of the film I was watching. I made do with the iPhone, but found I was constantly scrolling on its small screen until I reached the point when I couldn't be bothered squinting to read it anymore. My Windows laptop takes a day and a half to boot up and by the time it was ready, I had forgotten what I was looking up. I daren't leave it on standby as it drains the battery. So with a certain amount of guilt I purchased the iPad 2 and have had it for 3 weeks and I'm glad I did because it has impressed me a lot. It is so thin and light, yet switches on immediately from sleep mode. The high definition screen is just the right size to read everything on one page, but if the print does happen to be small, you can zoom in to make it bigger without losing too much surrounding material. There are no USB or DVD input slots. Some would say a big flaw is that it has no Flash Player. I haven't found it bothers me, as I can still play the videos I recorded on it and my music videos from iTunes. In fact the only input slot is for the charging cable. The frequency of battery recharging is nothing like the 3GS iPhone as it lasts days with light to regular use, including all-day standby mode. The camera isn't bad and you can take decent videos on the hoof as well. Again, it's not meant to be an outright camera and people would be forgiven for thinking you're mad if you are trying to capture your best friend's wedding on it, lumbering up to the happy couple in a drunken stupor with what looks like a flat brick in your hands. There (still) is no flash for photos, but in decent lighting conditions it takes good enough quality photos to print out.I opted for the 3G facility rather than MiFi as I wanted access to the internet on the move without relying on wireless hotspots for connection. if you buy the iPad outright, you can choose a PAYG micro sim card from whatever network is offering deals. I opted for the 3 network as they were the cheapest, offering 1G of data for a month for just under £10.50. Be warned though! If you don't use the whole of your 1G quota within that month, you lose it all as I couldn't find any network offering data rollovers to the next month. I have found that 1G for me may just about be enough. You don't use up any data when it's switched on to WiFi which facility you will need as 3G doesn's cut it when it comes to downloading a lot of material e.g. daily newspaper. The joke about the iPad being a large iPhone screen is not too far from the truth: I hardly read any instructions when I was setting it up for the first time.I purchased this iPad2 for considerably less than the prices currently quoted so shop around. However, if you want to go down the contract route, you can pay monthly with any network carrier offering the iPad2. Personally, I think it is an expensive way to go considering you can't make calls on it. I haven't tried the FaceTime facility which is a bit of a con as not only have you got to have someone else with the same facility on their device, but it only works if you both have a WiFi source nearby anyway. I hear the manufacturers are trying to get this working on 3G (or 4G?) though.All in all, I don't feel so guilty I bought this as it suits my particular circumstances. You should weigh up your requirements before purchasing. Don't expect this to be anything more than it is. What it does, it does well. Trouble is, with the current price it is set at, can you afford to have this rather expensive toy with its limitations? There I go, trying to talk myself out of it again....Too late, mate.I hope this review helps as I have tried to include things I wanted to know before I bought mine and couldn't find what I wanted in one place.
