Excellent portable, well built and fast external HDD

I had not heard of the Platinum brand before so did a bit of research and found they were a well known brand in Europe. A few other customers had written some useful reviews so I decided to give it a go.I've had quite a few external HDD over the years with varying success:- WD My Passport Essential SE 750 GB Silver Portable Hard Drive (USB 3.0/2.0)- WD Passport 250GB WE- Iomega (name escapes me)The Platinum 104109 is the fastest drive to date. Its virtually silent and is powered by a single USB cable. I've tried transferring large files as well as multiple concurrent files and performance is very good.I would have given it 5 stars but the picture of the drive is a bit flattering. The plastic used and the logo actually look a bit cheap but I would't let that deter you if your not bothered how it looks.One more thing, i had no trouble getting this to work on both my Mac's and Windows PC. I just formatted the drive when it arrived and it worked a treat. The same cannot be said of my WD My Passport Essential.

excellent for Mac backup

Before buying, I checked the brand as I was not familiar with it and I discovered that Best Media - the manufacturer for Platinum MyDrive, is a German company who is quite popular in Europe and it offers a 2 years warranty for their hard drives. Counting on the german reputation for perfection, I decided to just buy it and see how it works. I did not try it on a Windows system so I cannot comment on that but I used it for my Mac for back up. When first connected to my Mac, it did behave like a USB memory stick. It was easy to format it and use it immediately. When backing up, it was so silent that I had to touch it and feel the vibrations to know that it works, without looking at my screen. I think it was really fast considering that it did its first back up of a 250Gb hard drive in approx. 15 min.It is very thin and it looks better in flesh than the WD My Passport or the latest Samsung. If color counts for you, I can say that the red color is very much like in the picture - a poppy red. All in all, I am very pleased with my purchase. I don't know how long it will last but I hope it won't disappoint.It comes with a black High Speed Cable 2.0.
