5Film Fan with good hearing but a limited budget

Lovely bit of kit which exceeded my expectations.I bought a re-conditioned unit and have no regrets as I could not tell this was second hand. I had a big shop around on various journals (What Hi-Fi and the like) before settling on this because I spotted a bargain. It works beautifully with a pair of Jamo 200w floor standers, a Tannoy 100w centre speaker and a pair of eltax surrounds (i.e. I'm cheap and used speakers I already had at home), if you want to make the best of a system like this then find someone who knows and/or use the internet as their are plenty of audiophiles out there who are willing to oblige you with advice (and a lot of jargon). The auto set-up feature with the supplied plug-in mic was straightforward and being a typical blokish type I saw no need to load up and read the manual which came with on a CD as everything was working well straight away. There are plenty of HDMi inputs as well as other inputs for backward compatibility with older gear you might still want to use through it and so I rate it high for functionality. The sound is excellent, although I wish I had a bigger living room. You may note I did not mention a subwoofer, I thought I might get one later but actually there is no need as the front speakers are capable of enough 'boom' that I'd only need a SW to make my sofa vibrate during a film with an artillery strike scene. Some of the sound types I thought would be gimmicky but 'Jazz Club' which adds an echo effect has proved a great feature for listening to music and tricking my ears into thinking I am listening to a live recording. Generally I leave it set to Dolby Pro-Logic II or Virtual surround (the latter if the input source only has stereo). There is more I could add but to my mind this covers the main uses and in short I can recommend the Denon AVR-1612 and I'm glad I resisted delving into buying a £600+ priced system and had the funds spare for a nicer TV than I had originally planned to get.PS. Don't bother with the warranty Amazon plugs - if you want that peace of mind shop elsewhere - a quick look at the reviews will tell you why.
