The Boxer V8 Star helmet from Roof looks great with the fiery red colour scheme. The Boxer V8 helmet offers excellent adaptability as it can be worn as a full face helmet or as an open Jet helmet. Roof Boxer V8 Review

Not many reviews for this helmet about so having bought one thought I would provide some feedback. Date of review: 27/09/2011)I have previously owned an Arai Quantum, Shoei RF200 and Roof Le Mans. My good experience with the Le Mans meant I was willing to give Roof a shot when I came looking for a new "Flip" helmet. Note - I keep all my helmets for at least 5 years.The Roof apparantly meets very high Euro safety standards and is approved (unlike many others) in both "Jet" (Open face) position as well as a Full Face helmet. I believe this is because many of the other Flip helmets do no lock the front when tilted back. The Nolan N102 does however.The helmet lets in much more air around the face than I am used to. On the +ve side this does mean less misting than my Le Mans! It has been described as a summer helmet and so I will soon find out if it is too chilly for Winter. Quality is excellent, the paint finish is superb and the venting is far superior than on my previous Le Mans (which had plastic vents that broke off) - note that the Black Shadow version has a different venting structure. The visor on the V8 no longer impinges on the chin bar as with the previous version (the V), now rotating on a cam. I am however slightly unerved by the locking mechanism for the chin bar which does seem rather fragile. It has been tested officially to get the euro rating as a full face helmet but a couple of studs on the side gripped by sprung thin cable does not fill me with too much confidence (rather like wondering how the hell a jumbo jet stays in the air when the wings start wobling about!). There is also a trick to getting the chin bar into the correct position to lock down. You need both hands to do this so do not assume you will be riding when you lock the chin bar down. And make sure they are locked as a couple of times a quick tug on them pulls them away, i.e. they had not locked properly. On the plus side, the chin bar locking mechanism is on both sides of the helmet, so an unlucky fall that may unlock one side will have the safety of not unlocking the other. Several other flip helmets operate with a single button in the chin area.There is no real foam padding in the chin bar which adds to the free flow of air around the face. It also keeps the bulk and weight down for when you flip the chin guard up and back. You can feel the weight shift though. The Roof Boxer V8 does not need an internal visor as unlike other Flip helmets it allows you to use the main visor when in full face of Jet mode. I have not tried it in rain yet so as the chin guard sits on the outside of the visor we will see how much of a wet chin I get come rainy days. Note: to raise the visor there is a grommit (technical term for a lump and I don't know what it is really called) on the visor in the middle at the top. A bit fidley with thick gloves on but using the side of your gloved hand on it work fine.There are loads of visors available, I have already invested in the 100% dark tint. There are silver and blue morror finishes as well as yellow and blue tint.The visor change requires the chin guard to be removed. I am used to the Roof screw mechanism in the side but be assured this is not a swift change like Arai and Shoei. Chin guard comes completely off before you can swap visor. I would say you can do it in about a minute... Unscrew both sides, remove chin guard, remove visor from both sides, put on new visor (one side then the other), position chin guard, place and tighten the screws. 10p seems to work well for the screws!I am a size 59cm head. When it comes to Arai, Shoei, Nolan and Schuberth I fitted best in a Medium. With Roof I fit best in a Large. This was the same for my Le Mans previously. I mention this as the lack of retail stores for Roof means a lot of people will look to order online. The Roof apparantly caters for a slightly rounder head shape (when viewed from above) rather than oblong. The medium fit for me was just slightly compressive.Sound proofing is surprsingly good. This is helped by the style of the nose which comes back under the chin, reducing some of the road and wind noise.Finally - personal choice but...what a great looking helmet IMHO.

I've had the Roof Boxer for a month or so now, my observations so far are:General build is good, have had no issues with any of the finish, vents, visor, chin bar or clips.The flip front works well for me, enabling the chin bar to be rotated right back, only issue I can see if you have a pillion, its pointing in their face.I like the open face mode with the flip down visor, easy to manipulate. To shut the chin bar takes a little getting use too, to enable the clips to engage, but once you get the knack it's easy even with one hand. You need to remember to lift the visor clear of its seal.I wear glasses and have had no problem sliding them on while wearing the helmet.Only slight issue I've found is the chinstrap clip is small so my fat fingers with gloves on have a problem actuating the release button.Its very close fitting to your face, so if you have a Dan Dare chin you may have a problem.I've not used it much in wet weather, with the visor effectively being inside the flip front I did think I'd have a problem with rain seeping between the visor and chin bar, however in the few showers I ridden in the seals work ok. How good it would be in prolonged rain I'm not sure but logic says its may leak, but you probably be wet elsewhere anyway.On the whole very pleased with it, nice compromise between a full and open face.
