QNAP TS412 - Excellent
By nathan_hitchman
After spending much time researching the various NAS drives available this was the one I settled on.There are a large amount of configuration options within the NAS, perhaps more than enough for the average technical home user.I have an atom PC (running windows home server) connected to the NAS drive via a Gb switch which is also connected to 3 x Popcorn hour A210 boxes, which allow the sharing of all my media and even applications through the TVsThis setup allows me to run a SQL server, MySQL server, IIS web server and a PHP web server. There are plenty of backup options for most scenarios within the NAS. 2 x Gb ethernet ports to provide load balancing and redundancy in the correct environment.I have 4 x 3Tb HDD in the NAS. They are not in QNAP's compatibility list, and they only cost £120 and have performed perfectly so far.The seller I also very good and reliable. If there is anything you would like to know, please comment on this reviewAn outstanding product.Nathan

QNAP TS-412
By P. Pang
This is undoubtedly one of the best NAS Server I have ever used. My original NAS was a Quantum SNAP server dating back to late 90's which is still running by the way, then I moved to the Acer Altos EasyStor. They have both outlived their usefulness, now the TS-412 have replaced both of them, and all I can say is that so far so good and it has lived up to my expectations. It is quiet, it's fast in writing and retrieving data. The management is easy, and done via a browser. Security is good, well it is adequate for me as my home network sits behind an additional layer of Firewall provided by Cisco. The LAN connectivity has redundancy, and with a Raid 5 configuration, it is servicing four platforms for me, MAC OS X, Windows Win 7 and Win XP and finally Linux, what more can I ask for. It is good value too, basing my experience with the Quantum Snap and Acer Easystor. But then again they were of a different time and class of servers, and they were good in their time. But now the TS-412 rules the roost. Great job QNAP.

Relatively easy to set up - works great!
By Mr. John K. Whitehead
It took a while to set this NAS up but that was mainly down to having to update the firmware on the hard drives that I had selected to use with the NAS - be sure you check the compatibility list for your hard drive selections as there are known issues with certain drives - most notably the green / low power drives which are not recommended for use with this...Once the drives firmware was all up-to-date, it was a simple job to bolt them into the caddy's and install, power on and away we go. First area that I found a bit lacking was the documentation - the quick start guide is a bit too brief (how to install the disks and power on) and then the rest is up to you - there is a PDF manual on the CD, but who reads those right? The UI is fairly intuitive - if you have ever set up a Router for your ADSL (via the web interface) you will have no problem.I have yet to find anything this little box of tricks can't do - it's currently backing up my Macbook pro using time machine, whilst I am dumping my data to it from my PC workstation, and PC laptop. Also running now as a media server - I have yet to try it as an iTunes server but that's next on the list!Overall I am very impressed - all the services you could want from a NAS and a media server all in one small little package - well worth the money.
