Early Days, but an Excellent Start

This is my first experiences of any NAS, let alone QNAP, so that might be a factor. I needed to replace an aging [and filling!] Apple Time capsule, and elected to try a NAS with a set of 4, 3Tb Western Digital Caviar Green SATA Drives [WD30EZRX model]. The unit is shipped in a sturdy cardboard packing case and enclosed with the shaped, injection-molded foam liner, to give best possible protection in transit. Build quality is absolutely superb from a case perspective - a sleek, exceptionally well made enclosure from sturdy metal and quality, high-density molded plastics. A slight disappointment with the 4 drive trays, which seem a little flimsy in comparison with the rest of the case, but they exist only to ensure that it's easy and safe to insert/remove drives, and they do that job superbly well. The housings will take either 2.5" or 3.5" discs and fixing screws are provided for both. Drives are locked into place with "chassis" keys - 2 provided - as a precaution against accidental removal. It takes 5-10 minutes to unpack, fit the discs, connect and power up. While the system is booting, a single package, QFinder, needs to be installed to either a Windows or MacOS system. This utility will hunt out your NAS [by the time you've installed it, the NAS will have got itself a DHCP address from your network] and connects, to permit you to perform the initial setup. About 7 quick questions later and your discs are formatting ready for synchronisation. Depending on the drive sizes and the RAID setup you opt for, the post-format initialisation and synchronisation may take a while. I used 4 x 3Tb drives in a RAID 5 array, which gives approx 8.2Tb of space and required about 6-7 hours to be ready for use.It took me under 10 minutes to get working connections from a Mac Mini, a Windows 7 PC and a Linux PC (ubuntu). Windows and MacOS are very straightforward, but the additional flexibility of Linux means that you can choose between e.g. NFS or SMB depending on any other networking preferences you may have opted for.In operation the unit is essentially silent - you won't hear it from 2 metres away, apart from the occasional 'snick' of a drive head moving. Connected to a decent Gigabit switch with reasonably powerful machines on similar links and performance is exceptional. I haven't had a chance to run any formal tests yet, but for reasonable sized transfers [4-6Gb range] I would guestimate it's 40-100% faster than my 2nd-Generation Apple Time Capsule.Administration can be performed via a web interface. The on-board Atom CPU gives exceptionally quick responses, and the graphical environment [reminiscent of Apple's CoverView approach] is slick and looks very good. All Admin activities can be driven from the web interface, and so far it's proven to be trivially easy to use and set up.Obviously too early to offer any thoughts on reliability - perhaps the only concern may be noise from the cooling fan if/when it gets coated in dust. So far, however, it's silent.This was a very significant financial investment [NAS plus drives are not a cheap combination] but I am delighted with the results and the ease of setup and use. Cracking product, great solution.
