I purchased this item as a gift for my wife, she is very happy with it. She was a little surprised to find there is no English translation whilst learning, although I think this makes perfect sense. She is making good progress and finds the course enjoyable. A good product.

Fun and Effective Way to Learn the Basics of Spanish

I have previously used the Rosetta Stone system for studying languages and found that it is a very effective way of learning. By teaming up Spanish words with pictures to illustrate them you quickly find yourself thinking in Spanish. This is in contrast to more traditional methods of learning where the Spanish word would be presented with its English equivalent, which is the way that most of us would have been taught at school.The course is divided into lessons, each of which is segmented into a number of sections. In that way pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and the written word are each covered within the lesson. At the end of each segment you are given a percentage result which is quite an incentive. I remember how pleased I was when I first got a 100% mark for the first time!Personally I find that this way of learning suits me, and I soon noticed that I was progressing through the lessons faster than I was expecting to. This is because I was enjoying the course and the way in which it was presented and this is quite an important element in learning. The Rosetta Stone system certainly works and that is why it is used in many schools and is the reason that many language teaching professionals rate it so highly.There are some aspects that would be purchasers should be aware of however. This course comes with a 3 month access to the online aspects which include live tutorials with French native speakers, and various community activities with games etc to improve your skills. You have to commence your inclusive three months within six months of purchase. Should you wish to extend this beyond the inclusive three months, it will cost £39 per three month additional segment according to RS customer services. If enthused after having gone through Level 1, you wish to get hold of Levels 2-5, the official policy is that you have to buy the Level 1-5 package and receive no credit for having already purchased Level 1. However, although it is by no means guaranteed, apparently if you ring Rosetta Stone customer services they may well be able to help out.As a final point, what you are purchasing is a personal license from Rosetta Stone, and you cannot legally sell this on - hence you are not legally going to be able to recover some of the cost on the second hand market when you have completed the course and given that this is quite a big up front investment, this is a point worth noting.

Pricey for this level

If you're an absolute beginner then Rosetta Stone is a very good, comprehensive way to get started. There are a lot of teach yourself courses available, particularly for Spanish, on computer media, but there is always some annoying quirk. This set is good but I think the price is high especially for a beginner level set. I do understand the high price of the more advanced levels, but a beginner set should be less costly because a lot of people don't know if they can take to a new language until they have a go, but they might be put off this for the cost
