Excellent as a TV!!
By micdob
I looked in all High Street stores to view this TV before I bought from Amazon, but could not find it anywhere, which is strange as this is Toshiba's highest spec TV for the UK. It can be ordered, but if you are going to fork out £1000+ on a TV, then you really want to see it in action first. There were no customer reviews to be found online either.I was informed, the only difference between the WL and YL series is appearance, they are identical in every other way, so I risked buying the slightly cheaper WL. When I received the set, I discovered there are no 3D glasses included with the WL but there is 1 pair with the YL! (I cannot understand why these companies are promoting 3D, yet you have to pay an extra £60-£70 for each pair of glasses to view the 3D content!! Are they trying to milk every penny out of customers they can get away with?)Back to the TV. The picture quality to me, seems better than the top of the range Samsung, Sony, Panasonic and Sharp TV's I compared it to. The HD on Freeview and Satellite (not Freesat, but you can tune into up to 4 different satellites, if you connect to a dish) is impressive and the standard definition is nearly as good (I am sure it is 400Hz not 200Hz as advertised). Sound is pretty good for such a thin TV too, so as TV it is excellent. You can record TV with a flash drive, no need for an external HDD. But the 'Smart' features really are a let down. Toshiba Places is a waste of space, BBC iPlayer not great, no Web browser. So, if you want a TV for the extra 'Smart' gimmicks, buy a Samsung, if you want a TV for the picture quality and think £1000 is not too much, then this is recommended.p.s. Since buying the TV, I have contacted Toshiba about the 3D glasses not being with the TV and they assured me that there should have been a pair free with the TV. So I contacted Amazon and after several e-mails and phone calls have been sent a pair of Toshiba 3D glasses and can now confirm that the 3D is as spectacular as I expected from this top TV. I also noticed that the price has dropped over £300, but I still think it was an excellent purchase.

A fantastic high-end TV
By SpecialOrder937
The 46WL863B has been manufactured using premium materials. The frame is made of sandblasted aluminium. The panel is an advanced MVA one made by AU Optronics. The screen is covered with anti-glare glass. The TV looks sleek, modern and classy, and feels incredibly robust. In addition to the excellent build quality, everywhere you look are little indicators that the 46WL863B is a high-end device. The front control panel features touch-sensitive buttons. The built-in Wi-Fi is able to connect on the 5GHz band. MHL (Mobile High-definition Link) is a connection option, meaning you can connect a mobile device via the new standard. A satellite antenna socket is included for going the Freesat route if you should wish. A face recognition camera is built-in. The remote control features a sliding aluminium cover. Lesser TVs generally don't have these things. But the main thing is the picture. It's wonderful, even without the use of Toshiba's TPA-1 calibration tool. Blacks are black. There's no noticeable backlight bleed. Motion handling is great for an LCD-based TV. HD sources look flawless, and standard definition sources - thanks to Toshiba's CEVO processor - look better than any I've ever seen on an LCD panel. That's not to say the TV is perfect. The audio doesn't match the high standard of the visuals (though you'd be doing yourself a disservice by having a TV this good and not upgrading the audio via a separate speaker system). The 3D system is the active type, which isn't as comfortable to watch as passive 3D. The smart features - under the banner Toshiba Places - aren't as good as those offered by some other TV manufacturers. The remote control, with its aforementioned sliding cover, is oversized and cumbersome to use. The tabletop stand that came with my unit refused to accommodate one of the seven screws required to secure it to the TV (in the end I just gave up and made do with six screws, but it was quite an irritation at the time).Despite this list of shortcomings, the 46WL863B is still a 5 star item in my book, especially since such a fantastic TV can now be had for about half of what was being asked for it upon its initial release.
