4small and effective
By Don Panik
As our televisions themselves increasingly get connected to the internet, the need for devices such as this will pass, but in the meantime, this provides a relatively cheap and straightforward way of watching downloaded movies, and viewing digital photos on your TV. Plus you can listen to various music files (thankfully not limited to mp3), so if you hook it up to a decent amp you have a very flexible juke box.If you are looking to buy this you will appreciate that you need some form of media storage to attach. I tried both SD card and a portable hard drive (i.e. no seperate power) Both work equally well (even though the card was a fairly old and slow one - films played perfectly), but it is not particularly fast at scanning the contents and the HD took about 10 - 15 seconds to fire up.The main advantage over simply linking up your laptop to the TV (apart from not tying up the lap top - we all have to multi-task!), is that the package includes a remote control, so you can do all the stuff you normally do when watching a film such as fast forwarding, and so on. The zoom feature is great for photos, and handy to have a volume control as well. The box of tricks itself is smaller than I was expecting - a good thing, and is the normal shiny black. No HDMI cable but these are ubiquitous these days, and it does include a jack to 3 phono lead which is handy if you want to use an older TV with no HDMI.All in all, this is a good product. The range of media types playable covers most but not all the common ones in use. About my only gripe is the music sorting software is a bit basic. It is not possible to sort by artist or album, it simply lists all the songs. The answer is to play by folder, which is supported - so make sure you sort your files into easily identified folders when you load onto your hard drive etc. You can loop, replay single and all and shufffle. My other gripe is that I could do without the philips screensaver bouncing around my TV when I am listening to music, but I think you may be able to turn this off in the options. There are plenty of similar products on the market and you can pay less, but I can confidently recommend this machine as quietly effective. Buy with confidence.

5Great bit of kit for the media-loving geek

I'd previously been using my PS3 to watch movies and tv shows downloaded from the web, off a USB hard-drive. This was made more difficult by the need to have the drive formatted to FAT32, which limits the size of the files you can upload on to the drive to 4GB. It has also meant lugging the large, heavy and unwieldy PS3 around the house, from man-cave to living room to bedroom.Along comes the Philips HMP3000/12 HD Media Player and at a stroke makes this process a LOT easier. It's a tiny black box, that sits discretely under the TV, hooks up via HDMI (not included but costing very little to buy). Once you'[ve plugged in your USB hard drive (or SD card, or other connection) the unit is switched on via the small remote. It is a touch slow to respond, taking up to 10 secs to power up and show a picture. Once it has detected the drive, you can easily and simply navigate to it via the straightforward menu system. You can view by file type (music, movie, pictures etc) or by folder, which is what I tend to use.Once you've found your selected file, it handles very much like a DVD player. All the same functions are available to you, and the system even remembers if you have partially watched a file and will allow you to resume from that point when you restart the file. Very handy. The only small glitches I have noticed so far have been a loss of synch between sound and picture, which has only been apparent once or twice, and a slow response when turning it off. Other than that, this is a great, inexpensive way to view your media files on your TV without having to hook up your PC to your TV.

5A very good media player
By ANRIHK
The media player plays almost everything. Nice use of subtitles. The player is small and stylish and the remote control is perfect.
