Great tent but small details let it down
By Mr. John K. Whitehead
I have been a fan of Terra Nova tents since I purchased an Ultra Quasar what must be around 12 years ago. At the time I was a venture scouts leader and wanted something really rugged that would handle the rough stuff that I was going to put it through. It did a fantastic job and is still going today. Now, somewhat older and a family man I was in the market for a tent to take my young daughters and wife camping with. I immediately went to the Terra Nova brand and came across what looked to be the ideal solution - a tunnel tent with bedrooms, but with sensible poles and enough guy ropes to keep it up in strong winds (having seen normal tunnel tents collapse under a sideways wind I would normally steer well clear of tunnel tents).Well first impressions on pitching the tent - easy to get it up, great build quality, very very sturdy (would not expect anything else from these guys), and all round looks to be well worth the money. Having said that, once I got inside the tent, I was a little disappointed. Production QA had obviously overlooked the fact that the groundsheet had not been stitched in properly near to the side door - there was a 4 inch gap where it had obviously not been machined properly. Okay - so out with the sewing kit and got that fixed straight off - don't want any water coming in on the first night with the kids in the tent (okay - so I probably could have claimed for this as it was brand new - but I was in the middle of a field and needed to get the family set up for the night - what are you going to do!!!!)Assuming you get one of these and it has been QA'd properly (I can accept that I may have had a one off on the groundsheet issue), the thing that really lets this tent down is the seriously flimsy plastic clips used everywhere inside the tent. They are used for everything from holding up the bedrooms, to clipping back the doors and curtains when they are rolled back. It takes very little indeed to break these plastic clips (my 2 year old daughter broke 2 in one go when she fell against the side of one of the bedrooms). It's a small point, but an annoying one - why they have scrimped on the quality of these clips is beyond me.Otherwise, all good - the bags that the tent ships in for storage are exceptionally well made too!
