pionner 521 amp

I purchased this pioneer av receiver a few days ago. i have connect my virgin HD box, blueray and HTPC to it via HDMI in. and a single 1.4v HDMI out to my samsung led tv. everything is working as it should and the power is more than enough to make the hair on at the back of your neck stand up after watching the dark knight in 1080p. virgin media outputs 2.1 channels then splits to all 5 speakers equally on normal channels, and when films show on the HD channels, the dolby digital light pops up automatically and unleashes the proper dolby 5.1 channel surround sound. the blueray player always outputs full hd video and dolby hd, dts hd, the full works. My HTPC: i baught a new ati graphics card with hdmi output, which has the functionality to output both full hd video and hd audio (50quid), and sends full uncompressed pcm audio signal to this amp. and the pioneer av receiver beautifully creates 5.1 channels of audio, and tells each speaker around the room what sound to throw at you. Dolby HD and DTS HD is bloody awesome!The only negative thing is you have to use the yellow phono cable so you can view the set up menu on ur tv. and also there are very few options and menus are very very basic. but saying that, theres no need to muck about with settings, it just knows whats best and gives you the best possible sound. im quite fussy with sound, but it just seems to deliver everytime.conclusion- awesome buy! highly recommended!

I bought this receiver together with Pioneer speakers and it is wonderful! Clear sound, easy to set, many surround options (Dolby Pro Logic, stereo, game/movie etc.) The only issue we had was problem with basic setup: you can't see an on-screen menu (OSD) when you connect TV to receiver via HDMI output and composite connection is needed. Overall we're very pleased with this equipment and it was great bargain for price!

Budget surround amp.

I bought this VSX-521-k because it had a good review as a budget surround amp in What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision and a few decent reviews on the web. It is what it's advertised as, a good budget surround amp. Bit complicated to set up definitely not plug and play! I've got a Sony DVD HDD Freeview connected by co-ax and my Virgin box + Samsung TV both connected with optical cables. My PS3 had to be connected with analogue audio cable. The amp has got 4 inputs for HDMI but unfortunately the output to the TV couldn't cope with the output video from my PS3 and DVD recorder. Haven't read this part of the CD Rom manual fully but it seems that it admits that some equipment can't be dealt with by this output in the amp. In saying that, when you've gone through the listening to your amp section in the manual, the audio out is pretty good. I've got a 10year old set of Sony speakers (5.1) connected and a CD player and audio cassette player connected with analogue audio leads as well. The audio quality from my 15year old JVC CD player is excellent compared to what it was before. I had a Sony surround amp before, STDR something? Once it's set up play the scene in Gladiator when they come out of the tunnel to the big guy swinging the mace `round his head. Try Alien2 when the marines land on the planet and it's pouring with rain. In summary good amp with a great price tag from Hughes Direct who provided an excellent service. Nothing to get to excited about though.
