Damn good machine
By sibsssidor
I have this as company laptop since a few months. Main usage - java development, second - standard MS office applications. OS - widows 7 64 bits. A note of warning, I run 8GB of RAM and an SSD drive. So...The good1) Relatively lightweigth for the size and horsepower (don't expect a macbook air, though)2) All the horsepower I need to compile large java projects in Eclipse IDE and run the SW we develop3) Relatively silent, does not overheat at all eve if I keep constantly under heavy pressure4) Good battery time for the type of machine5) Robust and well built design6) WIFI card is excellent, both in range and speed7) I love 1Gb LAN. Makes backups and moving large amounts of data a pleasure.8) Capability of using a second hard disk - have no tried but it's a plus9) Upgrading RAM does not even need a screwdriver! HP engineers have done a good job here :-)The bad1) The keyboard light is pretty much useless2) They can provide a drive caddy rather than charging for it...3) 4GB for this type of machine is a Joke - the laptop came with 4GB and we moved to 8. Made all the difference in the world. Given the price of 4GB modules why not supplying with 8GB from start? All in allI love this machine. The combination of 8GB of RAM, and an SSD drive allows me to run the CPU at full speed without IO bottlenecks. Definitely recommended for professional use and once 8GB modules go cheaper I would max out on RAM. I don't miss an i7 process either.

It's so bad you would only get this as a free work laptop

If you bought this with your own money you must a right plonker. The HP Elitebook laptops are truly a joke, I went through many versions of them (44xxp, 6xxxp, 8xxxp, etc) every 6-9 months (Yes they typically last that long). There are so many things wrong with them, the design team must be a bunch of idiots. The screens are worse than the ones on a 6 year old Acer laptop I had to repair for a charity. They are noisy when the fans kick in with small CPU load. The trackpad is tiny and very badly design ergonomically, be prepared for lots of pains in your palms after first use.the rubber pads at the bottom are can be picked with a fingernail (get some flooring felt pads instead), the keyboard light is useless, you get more light by tilting the screen towards the keyboard, I can go on and on and on...If I had spent £200 on this I would be very disappointed. No wonder HP have decided to exit the PC market!
