Quite nice!
By D. Peterson
I bought this from a local merchant when NI knocked it down to £199 on sale at the end of 2011. I've used the high-Z instrument inputs, mic inputs, and main/headphone outputs, and so far I'm loving the quality (upto 24-bit 96khz). Because I have to keep the noise down where I live, I'm mainly using Sennheiser 650HD (250Ohm) headphones for my monitoring/mixing and this interface is doing an awesome job of powering those. My only gripe is that the KA6 won't be recognised on OS X Lion when you unplug it and replug it in IF you have VirtualBox installed -- VB doesn't even have to be running! You'll need a reboot to get the KA6 to work in this case. The explanation given by NI customer support for this is that the VirtualBox extension is somehow causing the KA6 to think it's connected to a Windows OS rather than an OS X one, and this causes the KA6 to internally change some mode/behaviour. I can confirm that installing VirtualBox does install a USB kernel extension, but it seems a little weird that NI can't properly detect the OS. No other USB-connected music hardware I've tried has this problem.FWIW, I think NI should provide a way in their driver or control panel to force re-initialization to the right operating system if the system can't reliably detect it.

A tiny marvel!

Alright, I've only just powered it up today (actually there's no power button) and plugged it into my iMac and Macbook. There was initially a problem with the unit being recognised on my iMac after unplugging then reconnecting it. This was shortly after I installed the driver so it may have been teething problems as I've now dis- and re- connected it several times using both my iMac and Macbook and there's been no problem since. In fact one of the reasons I bought this was because it was such a drag having to power down the computer when disconnecting/reconnecting my profire 610 which I was sharing between the laptop and desktop. Also the profire inputs were on the low side as regards gain, and so far the Komplete is much better on input 3/4 (where I plug in my keys/synth) but about the same on the mic inputs with an SM58. I do think audio interface manufacturers should give a booster button for mics with low outputs, rather than a pad button on Profire for attenuating (I can't imagine when I'll ever need that!).Soundwise, the Komplete is neck and neck with the Profire and noticeably better than the Mac inbuilt soundcard, and tracks sound much punchier and cleaner. Add to this all the inputs/outputs plus midi and it starts to look like superb value. The best thing though is the beautifully engineered design and tiny size (less than half the size of the Profire and with very similar features apart from having less outputs). This makes it more suitable for laptops where portability matters.I've docked it one star because of the mic input sensitivity I mentioned, but apart from that, this is possibly the best and probably the sveltest interface around for the price.

The bus-power is the limit
By ibf
The Komplete Audio 6 is a great interface with few drawbacks for its price range. The latency is remarkably low, considering its USB 2.0 nature. In addition to its 4 analog I/Os and the S/PDIF I/O it features a built in MIDI interface, which is sadly becoming a rarity with recent audio interfaces, and direct monitoring capabilities. It does not use an external power supply, so it is brilliant for recording on the go.In terms of sound" there isn't really that much to say. The Cirrus Logic converters are doing a good job in staying unnoticed, which is what we want after all. However, this is also where the drawbacks come in.The mic preamps achieve a maximum gain of +47 db which is fine for bus-powered devices but certainly lacking behind its externally powered peers. As a result, mics with a low output level, such as ribbons, might give you some trouble.Anyway, the noise floor is quite low, so you can actually use all the gain without the preamps' noise drowning out the actual signal. The major problem, though, is the phantom power. The Komplete Audio 6 struggles to power 2 condenser mics simultaneously, more so when using at least one large diaphragm. Here's hoping, that Native Instruments will attend to this issue in a future revision, maybe by adding an optional external power input. Not being able to run a condenser stereo setup through the interface is really a shame.Apart from that things are fine. The device feels very solid in terms of build quality and handles equally well.Drivers are fast and stable and the installation process is painless. The Komplete Audio 6 does run under Linux with the help of the ALSA driver, though some people are still reporting issues. Maybe search the forums of your particular distribution for reports of other users beforehand.
