There's no substitute for a Boblbee

The first time I saw a Boblbe-e / Boblbee backpack, I knew I had to have one; in fact the only choice I had to make was whether to buy a Megalopolis or this, the smaller Peoples Delite. In the end I plumped for the Peoples Delite, because I thought that its more compact dimensions seemed more suitable for use on my mountain bike than those of the larger, and more conspicuous, Megalopolis. That's not to say that the Peoples Delite won't make you stand out, because it will, particularly if (like me) you compound matters by buying one in this striking Tropic Orange colour. All joking aside, anything that can make you more visible to traffic, like getting a brightly-coloured backpack, has to be a good thing.As you can plainly tell from the photos, and even if you ignore their `extreme' colours, Boblbee hardshell backpacks are still strange beasts. The Peoples Delite comprises two sections, a tough padded fabric back with a hard ABS shell, bolted together at the bottom and joined at the sides by fabric sleeves. This design means that the Peoples Delite can open in a concertina-like way to accommodate larger payloads; the difference in available volume between open and closed isn't massive, but it is noticeable. Unfortunately, the unique shape of the Peoples Delite, combined with the fact that it's rigid, does lessen its internal capacity and limits the physical size and shape of the items you can carry.The two sections are kept closed by a waterproof flap that folds over them and fastens to a three anchors points - one on the back of the pack using a bungee-type pull-string integrated into the flap, and one on each of the pack's sides. It doesn't give me the same sense of security as a full zip fastener would, not helped by the fact that you can't use a padlock to keep the pack closed, and there is the question of how well it would keep the water out in driving rain, but it certainly feels fine enough for everyday use. And while the shell part of the pack would undoubtedly prevent water ingress, I'm not sure how good the back or sides would be at it.The pack is carried using Boblbee's very comfortable `generation 3' harness system, which incorporates two padded shoulder straps, a chest strap and a waist belt. All parts of the harness are adjustable so even the most oddly-shaped individuals should find that it can be altered to fit them. Boblbee include a handy padded phone pocket, attached to one of the straps, that opens by zips on both sides - putting the pocket here not only makes getting at your phone much easier, it also lets you keep your headphones plugged in with the cord always in sight.The Peoples Delite includes various anchor points dotted about the pack's sides, as well as several Velcro straps on the harness that can be used to attach certain Boblbee accessories to. Even if you don't have any such accessories, the points can be used to fix other objects to the pack, if you think creatively; anything with a belt loop or a carrying strap - or even something larger (using bungee cords, if you have them) - can be attached. The waterproof flap that keeps the pack closed incorporates a zipped compartment that can be accessed while on the move, if you're supple enough to reach it.On the inside, the Peoples Delite has only a single compartment, although there is a removable insert that houses a documents pocket and two small mesh pockets for items like books or electronic gizmos. This insert is held in place by two Velcro straps and a small (no larger than 13") laptop can be fitted in the space between it and the pack's back. How protected from knocks a laptop would be here is questionable as the only padding it would have is that on the pack's back, but it's certainly better than having it loose, bumping against the pack's hard shell.Boblbee make much noise about their hardshell backpacks' ability to protect the user through their inclusion of a lumber support and a certified back protector. In all honesty, I found that the lumber support doesn't offer much more in the way of extra comfort over any other pack but it may be that the benefits are just less tangible. The back protector is a feature I haven't fortunately had the chance try yet so I can't comment on how well (or even if) it would work.The Peoples Delite may have its limitations, but it's still a versatile, tough and feature-packed rucksack and almost a necessity for a bike rider on today's busy roads. And as something that'll make you stand out from the crowd, there's no substitute for a Boblbee.
