The Eyes Have It
By OysterValet
I've had these Sunwise Waterloo shades for several months now, and I am a happy bunny. I trawled around the Internet for shades which are polarised AND photochromic - the former to cut out glare from wet roads and the dashboard when driving, the latter to wear in various light conditions without either squinting with the brightness or blundering blindly into things through deep, dark, jet-black bottle glass - and didn't find much out there in my price range (i.e. sub 80 quid). I was also looking for a particular style to suit my face shape and cool, sophisticated self-image.The polarisation works fine. The Sunwise advertising seems to suggest that their polarised material is sandwiched between the lens layers, and from inspection I think this checks out. They also suggest that the polarisation film is stuck on the outside of some other sunglasses, risking it peeling off. That's certainly not an issue with these - they've lasted well. The optical quality is great - crispy clear, no apparent distortion. They have tenaciously resisted scratches over all this time, and all I have to do to look after them is wash the (removable) lenses with a drop of washing-up liquid and warm water from time to time. Nice! The photochromic aspect had me scratching myself ponderously. I found it hard to tell if the lenses were reacting to sunlight (the UV component) or not; I couldn't tell if it was changing shade. I even tried measuring the difference with a school datalogger and light sensor, but that wasn't sensitive enough to tell. But after some degree of waving the sunglasses around in front of bits of white paper, sprinting in and out of the house from sunlight to gloom and posturing in front of the mirror, I realised that the adjustment of my eyes to the ambient light levels was hampering my otherwise intricately scientific investigation. Simply wearing them and asking someone else to tell me whether they could see my eyes through the lenses or not worked a treat. The canny thing is, the photochromism seems to be pitched just right so that whether you're in "normal" light conditions or very bright ones, the transmitted light through to your eyes is very similar after the tint has changed - meaning that the scene is comfortable in each case (the lenses are rated 2-3). This is all very subjective, I know, but the shades do seem to work OK for me.The darkening and lightening of the sunglass lenses is asymmetric - it's around 20 sec to darken and well over a minute to lighten fully, but this has never been an issue for me doing any activity. When driving, for instance, I am at liberty to remove them from my nose to the top of my head; job done.As for the style - well, I bought the white ones because the black ones were out of stock at the time, which strictly speaking isn't my cup of tea, but I can't complain. The fit is secure but very comfortable on my face, which I'd rate as neither excessively wide nor extremely narrow. That may not be of any help to you!I'm a UK customer and as a cheeky little extra bonus, these shades are made in the UK, so I feel I'm supporting a good cause. Rule Britannia!
