Fantastic little system
By Ralph P
I was after a small system for my study, which isn't much bigger than a walk in wardrobe, and mainly wanted something that could play from my PC and iPod. My wife has a Macbook, and we also have a NAS with our iTunes library on it, so ideally if it was able to play from those sources would be a bonus. It was a toss-up between this and the Marantz M-CR603, but I also considered Sonos and Philips DS9800W systems. The Marantz might have an ever so slight edge on quality, but it was a big jump up in price, and lacked Wifi as standard. I could run CAT5, but it's not quite as convenient. The other systems were good, but I didn't need the multi-room capabilities of Sonos, and the Philips was just a bit lacking in features (and The lack of DAB isn't a huge problem given the massive number of internet radio stations it finds. So far I've tried TotalRock and Classic FM and the quality is outstanding compared to listening through my PC. Spotify works fine through my iDevice using AirPlay, although it would be nice to have that capability integrated (perhaps a future software upgrade may add that?). The Airplay upgrade itself was fairly painless - you register online with the code supplied, the MAC address of the Denon, an upgrade request code that the unit gives you, and the serial number. It would be better if it just worked out the box, but you only have to do it once, so it's no hassle.I partnered the Denon with a pair of Tannoy Revolution DC4 bookshelf speakers which, given the reviews I read after ordering, had me worried they might be a bit bright and lacking in bass but are near perfect given the small space. They're transparent, detailed and just really really nice to listen to, especially considering they're not even close to run-in yet. Worth considering if you have a small room, or will be using a sub and want some small speakers that won't dominate the room. All in all, I'm very pleased with the Denon / Tannoy combination.Update: I'm going to knock 2 stars off because the device was advertised as supporting Last.fm and Napster and neither of these services work. Last.fm will connect sometimes, but most of the time it says it's not supported in my country (I'm in the UK and was a paid subscriber). When it does connect, it fails to pick up any stations I've played on the web player, but tells me my Library is Empty. Searching for an artist plays songs completely unrelated to the artist I searched for - not even in a similar genre. Napster does not work at all. Denon blame the takeover by Rhapsody and a technical change, but they surely a firmware update that connects to the new service could be provided. I wasn't expecting an internet enabled device to be absolutely future-proof, but I did expect the services it was advertised as supporting to be available for longer than 3 months. It's a very capable little receiver in terms of sound quality, but take away the internet features and it's competing with a far greater number of devices, many of which can offer similar sound for less money. I wish I'd gone for Sonos - I don't use CD all that often any more.

Practical and useful - not cheap
By LondonMark
An outstanding piece of kit. It allows you to stream Itunes using Airplay and power any set of speakers you wish, effortlessly. Internet radio is a bonus as is (surprisingly) the CD player. Immensely simple to set up, I was streaming music within 5 mins of it coming out of the box. The small screen is a little disappointing, but only practically when setting up the network. The Ipod dock is easy to use and arguably quicker to get up and running than streaming. Why is this better than Sonos? Arguably not, although Sonos does not have a Ipod dock nor CD. Sonos is cheaper and potentially more flexible. However, this is a great piece of kit.

This piece of hardware is really outstanding. All works great and it is extremely simple to use. I was really impressed by the DLNA through WIFI (WLAN) which works out of the box and it is pure DLNA compliant.Works perfectly with minidlna installed on a Linux Debian Server. The sound quality for the price is also really fantastic.Nothing negative to say...
