4Excellent for single cups of coffee
By Sue H
This is a great coffee maker taking both ground coffee and coffee bags. It makes a nice creama (froth) on the coffee and a good 'head' on steamed milk. The water for coffee and steam is placed into the the reservoir at the back, this can be filled in situ or removed. The four circles on the top are in/out buttons at the extreme ends and indicators in the middle. To warm the water the the machine is switched on with a button at the back, the second indicator on the front lights green, and when at temp the third button with a wavy line also illuminates green. The warm up is pretty quick around a minute. With the coffee holder removed the left hand button is pressed to turn on the water pump and run some water through the machine to clean/ preheat it. The coffee holder has two metal filters one for ground coffee and another for coffee bags. Under this is placed a small plastic 'widget' this looks insignificant but with out it the coffee does not drip nicely down the spouts but can come out horizontally! The machine does not have an auto off so you have to turn off the water pump when you have enough coffee and watch the water level in the reservoir to ensure it does not empty whilst the pump is on.To steam milk the button at the far right is pressed. To release stream the black knob on the top is rotated which gives a variable amount of stream depending upon how far it's turned. The stream 'wand' is on the right hand side and moves forward and back and has a little up and down movement. It's recommended to run the first stream into and empty container as a little water comes through initially. The top of the device is warm, but not warm enough to keep coffee hot if you like it piping hot. After a little practice a frothy coffee can be made in the same time as a barista will do in a cafe. Noise is subjective and I would not describe any coffee machine as quiet. The motor pumping the water is quite noisy (I turn it on during ad breaks if I'm watching some thing on TV and want to hear clearly the audio). The steam is in contrast relatively quiet compared to our previous machine, and some of those in coffee shops where you would have to shout to be heard over the steam process. I guess the pressure is lower, however if makes a good froth with less than 1 min steaming so is sufficient for our needs. The cream colour of the machine body does show up coffee splashes but these are easily wiped off.The little niggles. The metal part of the steam wand gets hot so needs to be moved carefully when at temperature. The metal filers are very fine and the coffee still drips through for several minutes after the water pump has been turned off, the drip tray catches this if the coffee cup is removed, but then the tray needs regular cleaning. The grind of the coffee will have an effect on the rate at which the coffee drips through, I've tried numerous pre ground coffees and have always got drip after the water pump is shut off. I rarely find a solid dry plug of coffee in the holder at the end process. Even left over night the plug can be very wet. This may also be due to my inability to clean fine coffee grounds from the filter.A cappachino/latte is at drinkable temp shortly after being made, I often microwave the milk prior to steaming to get a slightly hotter coffee. The on/off switch at the back of the machine is hard to access placed behind the machine- turning it on off at the mains if the plug socket is more easily accessible gets round this.Even using a relatively strong blend of coffee I've yet to make two strong mugs of coffee at the same time. The coffee holder is not big enough, put too much in and the flow into the cup is not great. If I want two cups I make them singularly using fresh coffee for each one.The machine is shown with expresso cups. I can fit a mug under the coffee holder but have to tilt it slightly to get it in place. If you place the coffee makes under a kitchen cupboard you may need to measure the gap between the machine and the cupboard to ensure there is enough clearance to get the water into the reservoir.
