3KW or 7KW that is the question
By Mrs. E. J. James
Brought the 7KW version for a replacement waterheater we had had since the early 1980's.Due to extensive underground water pipe repairs several streets away our water pressure had been up and down for several months, making our old heater nigh on useless and using 3 kilowatts of electricity for no good reason.I was torn between the 3 Kw version or the 7 Kw version, as I did not want something on an industrial scale fixed to my wall, and the 7 Kw did seem a little extreme on power usage.I knew that having the 7 Kw version would mean major rewiring, as opposed to just repalcing my old 3 Kw with a new 3Kw and using the same switch and cable, but having the knowledge and knowing what I had to do to install it, I sent for the 7Kw unit.I'm glad I did, as; and I do not have a catologue in front of me as I write this, I do not think there is any difference in size between the two units, or, if there is, it is down to millimetres at best.We have a 3kw in our caravan and I would say the manufacuturers have used the same unit to house both the 3 and 7 Kw heaters.Having only had it in situ for a few months I have not gone through a full winter with it to assess its worth, but I feel the 7 Kw unit will be able to handle the extra coldness of the water and still give us water worthy of calling hot.The heater will require its own electricity supply directly from your consumer unit to the switch that is used to isolate it, and then from that switch to the heater, and a cable in the range of 4-6 mm in size, which might mean you have to install surface trunking, or be prepared to bury the cable in the wall and to knock your kitchen about. I got around this by coming into the upgraded amperage switch, necessary to carry the extra load of the heater, from the back, and through the wall of the kitchen/garage, then back out the same way and across the wall and back through the wall and back into the back of the heater, thus avoiding having to do any major work on putting my kitchen back together after installing the cables. Was the extra work and cost of installing a new electricity supply worth it? Yes, I think it was, as we now have constant hot water and never any thoughts of how hot is it likely to get today. The Triton is well made and looks good with its deep rounded edges and comes with instructions on how to connect it up.The connection of the water is a little fiddly, due to resticted access, but not insurmountable, I found it best not to screw it hard to the wall until I had the pipe fixed. Using longer screws so that the unit is held in place but allowing it greater movement helps. Also using a flexable water pipe instead of ridged solder together piping cuts down the need to be an accurate plumber.Judging on the hotness of the water coming from the unit over the last few months I donot forsee the winter being a problem. If it is - 'I'll be back!'One last thing! I went on amazon and found the company that supplied my unit, I ordered it, it arrived within the time set for its arrival, it cost about half the price Srew-Fix were charging for the same unit, money I used to put in the electrics.
